The William & Mary Athletics Department continued its tradition of pursuing excellence both in competition and in the classroom in 2018-19, with 358 student-athletes earning a spot on the CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll this year. Those athletes combined for a total of 638 honors between the fall and spring semesters, the Colonial Athletic Association announced this week. All 19 of W&M's teams that compete in the CAA, including football, had at least six honorees across one or both semesters in 2018-19.
This is merely the latest in a long line of accolades that William & Mary student-athletes have achieved over the course of the year:
- In November, the Tribe was announced once again as one of the national leaders in graduation rate, leading all public colleges and universities in the Federal Graduation Rate for the 14th year in a row
- Earlier this summer, 10 W&M teams earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sports in the APR. Nine of those teams earned a perfect score of 1000 points, the most of any public university in the nation.
- Five student-athletes were elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious academic honor society, the most in one year since 2015-16. That included men's gymnastics standout

Peter Makey '19 and women's gymnast
Sophie Harris '19. The women's swimming team produced two PBK initiates as well, in
Nina Lesser '19 and
Claire Williams '19.
- Gliozzi was honored by W&M from among the entire student body, winning the Thomas Jefferson Prize in Natural Philosophy at Charter Day.
- Williams was later selected as the 2018-19 CAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, from among a selection pool that included all 10 league universities and every sport in the conference. She was also the winner of the CAA Sports Leadership & Excellence Award for women's swimming & diving.
- Men's soccer standout
Ryder Bell '19 was named to the Senior CLASS Award All-America First Team.
- Men's basketball law student
Paul Rowley '17 J.D. '20 was awarded the prestigious Dean Ehlers Leadership Award in the CAA.
- Women's gymnastics senior
Madison Dwyer '19 was named an ECAC Women's Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
- A total of three W&M student-athletes were named Google Cloud/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in 2018-19, including
Ryder Bell in soccer (third team),
Hunter Smith '19 in baseball (second team), and Jacopo Gliozzi, who earned his third Academic All-America spot on the at-large team and his second-consecutive first-team award.
Known in previous years as the CAA Commissioner's Award, the Academic Honor Roll includes every student-athlete on a team in the league's 22 sports who earned at least a 3.0 GPA in the semester, and is published twice, after both the fall and the spring semesters are concluded for all CAA universities.
