William & Mary Athletics

William & Mary is committed to ensuring equity in the operation of W&M Athletics, including participation, scholarships and treatment.  We have assessment processes in place to identify issues in each of those areas so we can make equitable adjustments as needed.

Key elements of our assessment processes include:

Participation:  Following the “Policy on Athletics Interests and Abilities,” we systematically gather information to inform decisions around sports offerings.  We gather information from admissions applications and periodically survey the student body and admitted students to identify their athletics interests and abilities.  We also conduct annual reviews of trends in sports competition at the national and regional Intercollegiate level and in high school and club participation at the regional level.

Scholarships:  W&M awards athletics scholarships to men’s and women’s teams in proportion to the student-athletes participating in the athletics program from each sex. Those allocations are reviewed each semester and adjustments made as needed to ensure the appropriate balance.

Treatment:
Equitable treatment is an essential consideration in every decision. W&M routinely tracks processes and outcomes in eleven key areas:  equipment and supplies, scheduling games and practice times, travel and daily allowances, coaching, academic tutors, locker rooms and fields, medical and training facilities and services, housing and dining services, publicity, support services and recruitment.  Athletics Department staff annually assess the budget and resource allocations for each of those areas, so that appropriate actions can be taken as needed.

If you have any concern about equitable treatment, please let us know by contacting us at swa@wm.edu or reportconcern@wm.edu (https://www.wm.edu/report/).  We welcome your comments and will treat them confidentially.
