The W&M men's track and field team only has five Colonial Athletic Association Championships in its history, and Mike Howell was a big part of the first two.  He was a five-time CAA Champion in the throws, and never finished lower than second in seven conference events.

After relatively calm freshman and sophomore seasons, highlighted by a third-place finish in the shot put at the 1990 state indoor championships and a runner-up showing in the hammer at the 1991 CAA Championships, Howell broke through in a big way as a junior in 1992.  He took second in the hammer at the Colonial Relays, then swept the heavy throws the following week at the CAA Championships, winning the shot, the discus, and hammer, the latter with a school and conference record throw of 194-4.  That was the first of three school records in the hammer for Howell, who was the only athlete to sweep those three events at any CAA Championships until 2017.

Howell also took third in the Penn Relays in 1992, improving his record to 197-6, and then, finished the year with an eighth-place finish at the IC4A Championships.  As a senior in 1993, Howell defended his conference titles in the hammer and discus while also taking second in the shot put, and qualified for the IC4A Championships in all three events.  W&M was hosting the championship meet that year, and Howell finished his career with another school record, throwing 62.82m (206-1) to take third overall in the hammer and earn All-East honors.  He also earned another eighth-place finish in the shot put.

At the time of his graduation, Howell could easily lay claim to the title of one of the greatest throwers in school history, ranking in the top 10 in every throwing event he attempted.  In addition to his school record in the hammer, where he owned eight of the top-10 performances in school history, he also ranked second in the weight throw indoors, third in the outdoor shot put, sixth in the discus, and 10th in the indoor shot put.  Howell's record in the hammer throw wasn't broken until 2015, 22 years later, and he still ranks third all-time in the event as well as ninth in the weight throw and the outdoor shot put.  His conference record of 194-4 in the hammer throw stood until 2014.
