Barb Wetters first came to W&M as the head women's basketball coach in 1978-79, and stayed for the next 30 years in ever-increasing roles before retiring in 2008 as the Tribe's second-in-charge.  During her time on the sidelines that ran until 1985-86, she led the Tribe to an 84-137 record and transitioned the program from the AIAW Division II, to the NCAA Division I.  W&M won the VAIAW Small College Championship in her first season, earning a spot in the Region II Tournament for the Tribe's first-ever post-season appearance.

Wetters' teams also took second in the state in 1980-81, as well as third in 1979-80 and 1982-83, and won then-record totals of 16 games in both 1978-79 and 1980-81.  Those squads were led by W&M Hall-of-Famer Lynn Norenberg Barry '81, who held the all-time scoring record for more than 20 years and is the only women's basketball player in school history to have her number retired.  Following the end of the 1986 season, Wetters moved into the administrative ranks as an assistant AD.  Her time included multiple stints as the Tribe's interim Athletic Director, as then-AD John Randolph '64 was fighting cancer before passing away in 1995.  That same year, Wetters was honored for her efforts by the Colonial Athletic Association as the inaugural winner of the Randolph Inspiration Award. The award recognizes individuals who through strength of character and human spirit serve as an inspiration to all to maximize their potential and ability for success.  In 2008-09, Wetters was named a CAA Women's Basketball Legend.
