Meet Information (including most up-to-date schedule and past champions)
Closed Meet
Due to university and local guidelines, there is no public attendance allowed at this year's Colonial Relays. A very limited pass list for family of W&M track & field athletes has been identified and will be allowed to attend and sit in a section of the stadium away from all athletes, officials, and staff.
The Meet
The 55th Annual Colonial Relays are much smaller in scale than years past, to help ensure that a quality event will take place within all appropriate medical guidelines. Only 12 men's and 13 women's teams will be competing this year, including American, Buffalo, Christopher Newport, George Mason, James Madison (women only), Lynchburg, UMass Lowell, Richmond, Stony Brook, VCU, VMI, Washington & Lee, and William & Mary. The meet also will not feature team scoring for the first time in more than 20 years. Events will begin at 11 a.m. each day, and on Saturday, April 3, there will be a brief recognition ceremony for W&M's 28 seniors on the men's and women's teams.
Scouting the Tribe Women
W&M has shown itself already to be very strong in the sprints this spring, and will look to capitalize on home track advantage to challenge several records. Redshirt-freshman
Amaya Johnson (Sterling, Va.) is the fastest woman in the Colonial Athletic Association in the 200m dash, and she'll look to add the 100m dash to her tally as well. Redshirt-junior
Felecia Hayes (Chesapeake, Va.), meanwhile, has run lifetime-bests in the 100m each of the last two weeks, and will attempt to keep that streak going while also moving up to the 200m as well.
In the 400m, W&M owns the top four spots in league list, led by freshmen
Grace Bir (Falls Church, Va.) and
Mary Gregory (Reston, Va.). Those two will run the quarter again alongside
Carly Swierbut (Newtown, Conn.) and grad student
Gabby Runge (Midlothian, Va.), while freshman
Makenzie Joiner (Mechanicsville, Va.), one of the fastest women in the nation in the 500m dash this winter, will take her first crack at the 400m hurdles looking to challenge the freshman record of 1:03.40 that has stood for 30 years. She'll run that event alongside senior
Josie Landis (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who is currently ranked first in the conference.
In the middle distance events, redshirt juniors
Lauren Finikiotis (Gibsonia, Pa.) and
Taylor D. Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) will each race the 800m on Saturday, and likely the DMR that day as well. Finikiotis will also run the 1,500m on Friday, looking to improve on her fourth-place ranking in the CAA. Jones, meanwhile, is ranked second in the conference in the 800m. Freshman
Kyra Holland (Warrenton, Va.), bronze medalist at the CAA Cross Country Championships last month, will make her first attempt at the 5,000m and will be running to try and beat the current league-leading time of 17:11, while her classmate
Emily Morris (Glen Allen, Va.) will attempt the 10,000m at the end of the night on Friday.
In the field events, highlights include the women's javelin which will kick off the meet on Friday morning with redshirt-freshmen
Kristen Herr (Willow Street, Pa.) and
Zoe Metzger (Wayne, Pa.) competing after setting collegiate-best marks last weekend at Navy. This week, they'll be joined by heptathlete
Claire Bailey (Fairfax, Va.). Redshirt-junior
Taylor E. Jones (Fairfax Station, Va.) set lifetime-bests in both the triple jump and the pole vault last week, and will look to continue that momentum even higher up W&M's all-time lists this weekend. Last but certainly not least, freshman
Chelsea Mitchell (Canton, Conn.) tied the freshman record in the long jump last weekend, and will took to own it outright following this weekend's meet.
Scouting the Tribe Men
On the men's side, the showcase event will likely be the pole vault on Saturday morning, where newly minted school record-holder
Michael Fairbanks (Fairfax Station, Va.) will compete looking to capture his first Colonial Relays title. Last week at Navy, he broke the school record and ranked top-15 nationally in the pole vault after jumping 5.43m (17-9.75). That height is higher than both the Colonial Relays meet record and the all-time Zable Stadium record. Also in the field events, redshirt-freshman
Jared O'Riley (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) registered a lifetime-best in the javelin last week, and is undefeated so far this season against anyone not also wearing a W&M uniform.
On the track, grad student
Theo Chambers (McLean, Va.) will race the 200m dash on Saturday afternoon, looking to add the conference lead in the shorter race to the one he already has in the 400m. The quarter-mile will see grad student
Chris Rosales (Harlingen, Texas) put his 48.5 speed to good use. Both men also look to figure prominently on the Tribe's 4x400m at the end of the meet on Saturday.
In the middle distances, freshman
Josh Lewin (West Chester, Pa.) and junior
Colin Grip (Action, Mass.) will both run the 800m. Lewin set the freshman record at 1,000m indoors, and if he can repeat that feat outdoors, he'll need to also put himself in NCAA-qualifier close to 1:49.00 flat. The 1,500m will see
Johnny Rogers (Vienna, Va.) leading the way, shortly before he also races and leads two freshmen,
Sam Pritchard (Springfield, Va.) and
Harrison Vives (Mendham, N.J.), in the 5,000m. Redshirt-junior
Matt Frame (Alexandria, Va.) will race the 3,000m steeplechase early on Friday evening, and the end of the night will feature redshirt-junior
Spencer Tsai (Eugene, Ore.) leading a pack of younger teammates in the 10,000m.
