The William and Mary men's track and field team opened the spring outdoor season this weekend with a terrific showing on-campus with the Tribe Open, breaking the 18-year-old stadium record at 3,000m and totaling five championship qualifications. Athletes from eight different teams and several unattached and professional athletes competed in Williamsburg during the meet.
Hammer Throw
The meet started Friday afternoon with the men's hammer throw, which was won for the second-year in a row by senior
Zach Jordan
(Dublin, Ohio)
. Jordan twirled the hammer a distance of 54.01 meters (177-2), qualifying for the IC4A Championships also for the second year in a row. Freshman
Matt Renn
(Annandale, Va.)
was fourth in his collegiate debut in the hammer throw, throwing for 38.57m (126-6).
3,000m Run
In the 3,000m run, sophomore
Alex McGrath
(Marlborough, N.H.)
continued his impressive year by winning the event with a stadium-record time of 8:17.53, breaking the mark of 8:21.0 set by
Jeff Hough '92
in 1994. McGrath led a Tribe sweep of the top six places, and 11 of the first 13 finishers. Second place went to redshirt-freshman
Josh Hardin
(Sterling, Va.)
in 8:18.89, and true freshman
Ted Richardson
(Midlothian, Va.)
was third in 8:21.76. Senior
Brian Sklodowski
(Newark, Del.)
was fourth in 8:23.39, and classmate
Ben Massam
(Chatham, N.J.)
rounded out the top five in 8:24.46. Also of note was the performance of two more freshmen, who qualified for the USAT&F Junior Championships 5,000m with their 3,000m times.
Rad Gunzenhauser
(Pittsburgh, Pa.)
ran 8:24.61 for sixth place, and
Joshua Mercado-Reigh
(Citrus Heights, Calif.)
was ninth in 8:32.82.
400m Hurdles
Senior
Chris McIntosh
(Owings Mill, Md.)
opened his final campaign with a personal-best in the 400m hurdles, running 52.99 for second place. His time was also notable in that it was his first IC4A individual qualification, and moved him up to seventh all-time in school history.
High Jump
The team's third IC4A qualification came in the high jump, where sophomore
Ben Katz
(Manakin-Sabot, Va.)
returned to competition with a five-centimeter personal-record and cleared the bar at 2.04m (6-8.25) to take second-place. Katz moves up into a tie for ninth-place all-time at the College with his clearance.
110m Hurdles
In the high hurdles, junior
Matt Clark
(Richmond, Va.)
took third place with a personal-best time of 15.06 seconds. Clark now ranks 10th all-time in school history in the event.
Shot Put
In the shot put, senior
Dan Klatzkin
(Gaithersburg, Md.)
opened his season with a victorious put of 14.48m (47-6.25).
Discus
Klatzkin also turned in an impressive performance in the discus, coming back to throw 45.90m (150-7) to take second place.
Long Jump
Ben Katz
also recorded a second top-finish to his day, taking silver in the long jump with a leap of 6.63m (21-9).
1,500m Run
In the 1,500m run, freshman
Andrew Ryan
(Gloucester, Mass.)
made his outdoor debut by running 4:08.21 for fourth place.
4x400m Relay
The Tribe brought the weekend to a close in the 4x400m relay, with a fifth-place showing of 3:27.53. The quartet included
