WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Double the gold, double the fun. That's how the saying goes, right?
At the second day of the CAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Zable Stadium on Saturday, William & Mary put a pair of standouts at the top of the podium—
Daniel Layton captured first in the decathlon for the second straight year, while freshman
Jason Nwosu was best in the shot put. Nwosu was also named Most Outstanding Field Performer.
Wrapping up his final home event in Green and Gold, Layton's performance was nothing short of dominant. His 6,640 points weren't only a PR—it was nearly 600 points higher than his last mark. He also set the new school record in the decathlon 110m hurdles, running a 14.75 to top the previous time of 15.01, which was set in 1997. And there was still more. Layton's repeat win was the first for W&M in the decathlon since Phil Agee did it in 2003-2004, while his score was the best for any Tribe athlete since 1997.
Meanwhile, Nwosu, competing in his first outdoor championship, notched his own impressive showing. He hit his winning distance, 16.61m (54-06.00), on his final throw of the morning.
Stephen Larson also found his way to the podium, running 1:51.54 in the 800m to take bronze.
Of course, because adding to the W&M record books has become something of a tradition this season, the Tribe delivered on that front as well.
Austin Rice broke the program's freshman record in the 400m, crossing the finish line in 48.05 and capturing fifth place in the event. The previous mark of 48.39 was set in 2017.
As a team, William & Mary finished fourth with 90.50 points. Northeastern was first with 194 points, while Monmouth (183) and North Carolina A&T (123) rounded out the top three.
