HIGH POINT, N.C. – Not:
We Are The Champions. But instead:
We Are The Record Breakers.
At High Point University's Meet of Champions on Saturday, William & Mary recorded a team-wide performance that saw three brand-new school records set, multiple PRs posted, and plenty of season's-best numbers. So, cue up Queen's greatest hits as we do our best collective Freddie Mercury impersonation.
The 4x100 quartet of
Amaya Johnson,
Lizzy Gregory,
Anna Kessler, and
Melissa Cunningham got things started for the Tribe as they topped their own program mark in the event, posting the first-ever sub-46 second finish. Crossing the finish line in 45.97, the squad eclipsed their previous time of 46.18—which they set earlier this year at the Colonial Relays.
Emily Ervin added to W&M's dominant day by breaking her own 200m dash record with a time of 23.91. The sophomore now owns the top-3 times in the event in Green and Gold history. And, then, in the 400m, Gregory ran a 54.36—the fastest time by a William & Mary athlete in the race. She now owns four of the top five performances in that event.
But that wasn't all, either.
After her historic run in the 4x100, Kessler posted a PR of 12.03 to finish ninth in the 100m. It was the third fastest time in Tribe lore. Cunningham wasn't far behind, finishing in 12.12—a top-15 time.
Meanwhile, Johnson posted a top-10 all-time finish in the 200m, with a 24.40. Kessler added another PR with a time of 24.89, while Cunningham finished in 24.94. Both of those times rank among the Tribe's all-time performers.
