VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Good as gold.
Daniel Layton proved the cliché true, capturing gold in the heptathlon with 4,831 points at Day 2 of the Colonial Athletic Association indoor track & field championship on Thursday. The senior became the first-ever CAA champ in the event, as the conference held its inaugural two-day title meet at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
In addition to his medal-worthy performance, Layton also set a bit of Green and Gold history—breaking his own school record in the heptathlon 60m hurdles with a time of 8.35. Layton set the previous mark at the Brant Tolsma Invitational last month, the same performance that saw him set the W&M overall heptathlon record with 4,967 points.
Layton wasn't the only one making his way to the podium, either.
After placing fifth in Wednesday's weight throw, freshman
Jason Nwosu took bronze in the shot put at 15.63m (51-03.50). Fellow first-year
Jonathan Kumer posted a PR of 1:51.08 in the 800m to also place third. The time was a new W&M freshman record and moves him into No. 5 on the Tribe's all-time performers list.
As a team, the Tribe finished sixth in the overall standings with 68 points. Northeastern captured first place with 171 points, while Monmouth (155) was second and North Carolina A&T (119) was third.
