Men's Track and Field Seventh After First Day at Colonial Relays

The William and Mary men's track and field team collected a pair of IC4A-qualifications and six all-time best marks Friday on the first day of the Colonial Relays, and ended the night in seventh place with 22.5 points.  After 14 events, Rutgers leads the standings at 80 points, with Monmouth (49.5) and Bucknell (49) locked in a tight battle for second.

1,500m Run
The Tribe's first IC4A mark of the weekend came in the 1,500m, where senior John Muller (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) ran 3:47.93 for a big lifetime-best and to take seventh overall.

5,000m Run
Rad Gunzenhauser (Pittsburgh, Pa.) also dipped in under the qualifying barrier, this time in the 5,000m, running 14:13.56 and taking ninth overall.  Two weeks ago at the Tribe Invitational, Gunzenhauser ran 29:50 in the 10,000m to meet the IC4A requirement in that event.

Hammer Throw
In the hammer throw on Friday morning, sophomore Brian Waterfield (Chesapeake, Va.) improved his lifetime-best by more than 11 feet to take second overall at 52.63 meters (172-8).  The performance shoots him up the record boards, and he now ranks seventh all-time in school history.

100m Dash
Freshman Bob Smutsky (Dillsburg, Pa.) sprinted the 100m dash in a time of 11.09 seconds, the fastest for a Tribe runner since Justin Benabdallah '06 went 10.94 in 2004.  Smutsky now stands as the 12th-fastest sprinter in school history.

400m Hurdles
In the 400m hurdles, the freshman pair of Jomar Aryee (Hillside, N.J.) and Paul Wahlman (New Hope, Pa.) each set collegiate-bests, running 56.31 and 56.97 seconds, respectively.  Aryee now ranks 14th all-time at W&M, while Wahlman improves to 16th in school history.

3,000m Run
In the 3,000m run, freshman Paul Gates (Fairfax, Va.) ran 8:36.02 to finish fourth overall, and classmate Nathan Thomas (Brentwood, Tenn.) was seventh with a time of 8:41.16.

Shot Put
Waterfield was back in action in the afternoon, and took sixth overall in the shot with a put of 15.40m (50-6.25).

High Jump
Rounding out the Tribe's notables was senior Ben Katz (Manakin-Sabot, Va.), who tied for eighth in the high jump and cleared the bar at a height of 1.94m (6-4.25).

The Colonial Relays continue all-day Saturday.
