WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Records were made to be broken. As the cliché goes. And as far as the William & Mary women's track & field team is concerned.
Running at home for the second straight week,
Amaya Johnson and
Catherine Garrison made Tribe history at Friday's Colonial Relays—setting the program record in the 100m dash and the freshman record in the 3,000m steeplechase. Garrison finished first in her event at 10:28.51, shattering the previous W&M freshman mark of 10:31.47, which was set in 2008. It was also the seventh-fastest time by an athlete donning green and gold in the race. Meanwhile, against a field of 60-plus athletes, Johnson's time of 11.96 earned her a seventh-place finish as well as W&M's new top mark.
And Johnson wasn't the only Tribe sprinter posting impressive numbers in the 100m, either.
Melissa Cunningham's 12.04 and
Anna Kessler's 12.06 rank them among the top-5 W&M all-time performances in the event, while
Lizzy Gregory's 12.22 puts her among the top-15.
Gregory also added another entry to the Tribe record books in the 400m, becoming the first athlete from the 'Burg to win the event at the Relays in its 57-year history. She posted a time of 55.09—the program's third-fastest run and now owns three of the top-five W&M finishes. Joining her in the event was
Carly Swierbut, who ran a PR of 56.22.
In the distance events,
Sofia Istnick highlighted the late-races with a first-place finish in the 5000m invitational. The freshman crossed the finish line in 16:28.59, a PR that moved her into 13th on the Tribe's all-time performers list.
On the field side of things,
Liv Cantby took first place in the javelin invitational at 44.26m (145-02.1), while
Sophie Fernandez and
Olesya Sitkowski went 1-2 in the pole vault invitational at 3.85m (12-07.5) and 3.75m (12-03.5). Fernandez's day moved her into a tie for No. 4 on the Tribe's all-time performers list.
Keeley Suzenski also notched another strong showing in the hammer throw invitational, finishing second at 56.65m. (185-10.1)
