Men's Track & Field Competes at Penn State This Weekend

The William & Mary men's track & field team is back in action this weekend, competing at the Penn State National Open on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 31-Feb. 1.  The first of two consecutive weekends in Pennsylvania for the Tribe, this weekend's slate is limited to a number of top entries.  Friday's events begin at 4 p.m. with the pole vault, and at 10:40 a.m. on Saturday with the 400m dash.  Every event can be followed via live results on TribeAthletics.com, and can be watched live on FloTrack.org with a FloSports subscription.

W&M will be looking to add to its already impressive list of post-season qualifiers this weekend, with 14 men competing across 10 events.  Redshirt-sophomore Michael Fairbanks (Fairfax Station, Va.) set a lifetime-best last weekend in the pole vault, clearing 5.10m (16-8.75) at George Mason, and will look to improve on that and climb the national leader-board.  Junior All-American KJ Cook (Buena Vista, Va.) is already qualified for the IC4A meet in both the shot put and the weight, and he'll be competing both events again this weekend alongside sophomore Troy Yearwood (Chesapeake, Va.).  Fellow junior Connor Scott (Mechanicsville, Va.) will also compete in the shot put, looking to improve on the indoor-best he set last weekend.

On the track, the distance runners take center stage for the first time.  Redshirt-junior JP Trojan (Chardon, Ohio) and redshirt-sophomore Spencer Tsai (Eugene, Ore.) will both race the 5,000m invitational on Friday night at 7:30 p.m., and the 3,000m on Saturday afternoon.  Trojan will be in the invitational section of that shorter race as well, while Tsai will team with redshirt-sophomore Evan Goodell (St. Louis, Mich.) in the college section earlier in the day.  Trojan was an NCAA qualifier in both the 5,000m and the 10,000m outdoors in 2018, his last track season.  Redshirt-senior Chris Short (Toano, Va.), the IC4A 1,000m Champion last winter, will run the 800m invitational on Saturday alongside senior Raul Chavez-Gutierrez (Marshall, Va.), the 2018 CAA Champion in the event.  Both men have run 1:50 before, and will be looking to hit 1:49 or better for the first time in their careers, and the first time for any W&M runner indoors since 1999.

Also racing on Saturday will be redshirt-junior Theo Chambers (McLean, Va.), in the 400m dash in the morning session.  Chambers is already qualified for the IC4A meet in the 500m, and has run 48.33 outdoors last spring.  In the rare 600m dash, redshirt-sophomore Colin Grip (Acton, Mass.) will try his hand for the first time.  The metric record in the event, 1:22.07, was set back in 2016, while the Tribe's best-ever time from 600y was run by Dave Watson '69 in 1968 and Charles Duckworth '74 in 1971, and converts to a 1:17.9c.  Rounding out the roster will be the mile run, shortly after noon on Saturday, with the line-up of senior Cooper Leslie (Camp Hill, Pa.), redshirt-sophomore Patrick Lynch (Vienna, Va.), and redshirt-sophomore Johnny Rogers (Vienna, Va.).  Lynch ran the mile last weekend at GMU as well, earning his IC4A qualifier in that race.
