The William & Mary men's track & field team opens its indoor campaign on Saturday, heading up to Annapolis, Md., for the Navy Invitational. Action begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Naval Academy, and can be followed on the web with live results through TribeAthletics.com.

The Tribe will have every event group in action this weekend, with 15 men making the trip to break off the rust after a long fall semester of training. Among the likely highlight performers is junior All-American
KJ Cook (Buena Vista, Va.), who will compete in both the weight throw and the shot put. Cook was an All-East performer in both events last year, before going on to make the NCAA finals and earn honorable mention All-America honors in the discus outdoors. Sophomore
Troy Yearwood (Chesapeake, Va.) and junior
Connor Scott (Mechanicsville, Va.) will also compete in both throws, while redshirt-sophomore
Jason Wright (Huntington Station, N.Y.) will compete in the weight throw. Scott was an IC4A qualifier in the shot put indoors last winter, and went on to finish second in the event outdoors at the CAA Championships. Yearwood, meanwhile, had a quiet indoor campaign as a freshman in 2019 before going on to earn an NCAA bid and finish sixth at the USAT&F U20 Championships in the discus during the outdoor season. Wright qualified for the IC4A Championships in the weight throw and finished 10th at championship meet as a redshirt-freshman a year ago.
In the middle-distance events, seniors
Raul Chavez-Gutierrez (Marshall, Va.) and
Chris Short (Toano, Va.) will both be running the mile, as will redshirt-sophomore
Colin Grip (Acton, Mass.). Short was the IC4A Champion in the 1,000m last year after taking runner-up honors in the 800m in 2018, while Chavez-Gutierrez was the 2018 CAA Champion in the 800m outdoors. For his part, Grip was a member of the Tribe's sixth-place DMR indoors last year at the IC4A Championships, and qualified in the 800m for the IC4A meet outdoors as well. Junior
Matt Frame (Alexandria, Va.) will run the 3,000m, where he has a best of 9:07.37, alongside
Johnny Rogers (Vienna, Va.) who will be running his first track race over 1,500m following a strong cross country season this fall.
In the jumps, redshirt-junior
George Cross (Leesburg, Va.) will compete in his premier event, the triple jump. He was runner-up in that event at the CAA Championships back in 2018, and set his indoor-best of 13.38m (43-10.75) at Navy's December meet last season. Sophomore
Ryan Thomas (Leesburg, Va.) also had a strong showing at this meet a year ago, coming just one bar behind the IC4A qualifier in the high jump at 2.00m (6-6.75), which was also just a quarter-inch below his lifetime-best. He'll compete the high jump on Saturday, as well as running the 60m dash alongside redshirt-junior
Matt Chabala (San Ramon, Calif.). Chabala will also run the 200m to start his season.
Redshirt-junior
Theo Chambers (McLean, Va.) was All-East indoors last winter on W&M's school-record 4x400m relay, and went on outdoors to win the CAA title in the 4x400m and finish second individually in the 200m to become the first Tribe sprinter to earn all-conference honors in that event since 1985. Saturday, he'll step upwards in distance to the 500m alongside freshman
Jack Bunting (Summit, N.J.). Both men will be racing the distance for the first time, but have strong 400m times of 48.33 and 49.57, respectively, which bodes well for their prospects on Saturday. The final competitor for the Tribe will be another true freshman,
Daniel Layton (Waynesburg, Pa.), who will race the 60m hurdles. Layton was sixth at the Pennsylvania State Championships in the 60m hurdles last year with a best of 8.19 seconds, a time that would be the fastest metric performance ever at W&M if he can duplicate it on Saturday. Only
Charles Dobson '75 (IC4A Champion from 1973-75) and
Jeff Powell (All-American in 1984 in the 55m hurdles), running the 60y hurdles, have ever been faster in the indoor hurdles based on standard conversions.
