The William & Mary men's track and field team continued to roll Saturday at the Chipotle Marshall Invitational, taking down a slew of records and qualifiers to go a perfect 2-0 in double-dual action. Before the meet even started, the Tribe was drawn into a triple with Eastern Kentucky and UNC Asheville, and came away undefeated against the pair. W&M beat the Colonels 80-58, and downed the Bulldogs 88-30.
In the shot put circle, both of W&M's competitors scored personal bests. Redshirt-senior
Taylor Frenia (Virginia Beach, Va.) broke his own school record with a put of 18.13m (59-5.75), winning the event and re-setting both the meet and track records along with it. Redshirt-sophomore
Preston Richardson (Franktown, Va.) came through a lifetime-best of 16.87m (55-4.25) to take third, and re-qualified for the IC4A Championships. Richardson's put was tied for the 16th-best in school history, and improved him to fourth all-time among Tribe athletes.
On the track, redshirt-senior
David Barney (Lynchburg, Va.) did a little re-writing of the record books himself, smashing the meet and facility records at 3,000m with his win in 8:15.15. In addition to qualifying him for the IC4A Championships, it was also a lifetime-best by more than 40 seconds. Sophomore
Ryan McGorty (Fairfax, Va.) and freshman
Cooper Leslie (Camp Hill, Pa.) both set lifetime-bests in the mile as well. McGorty won the event and qualified for the IC4A Championships in 4:10.29, re-setting his best by 5.8 seconds, while Leslie took fourth in 4:14.85, shaving 3.7 seconds off his previous try.
Also with another IC4A qualifier was junior
Davion Hutt (King George, Va.), who took third in the 60m dash at 6.93 seconds, and the Tribe's 4x400m relay, which qualified for the IC4A Championships for the first time in 20 years. Not drawn into the top heat, W&M was a dark-horse winner in the event in 3:19.04, the third-fastest time ever and the fastest since the school record was set in 1998. The team consisted of
Connor Atkinson (Ashburn, Va.),
Chris Short (Toano, Va.),
Troy Sevachko (Centreville, Va.), and
Dylan Anderson (Madison, N.J.), and is the first IC4A qualifier for W&M since 1997 and just the second ever. It was also just the 11th race ever under 3:20 (including 4x440y relays), and the first since 2000.
Other notables included the 400m dash, where Sevachko ran an indoor-best 49.88 seconds for the win. That was the sixth-best race in school history indoors, and improves Sevachko to fifth all-time among Tribe athletes. In the 60m hurdles, Anderson advanced to the finals and finished second overall in 8.39 seconds, tied for the ninth-fastest race ever at W&M.
William & Mary heads down to Winston-Salem, N.C., next Saturday, Feb. 18, for the UCS Invitational. The meet will be held at the JDL Fast Track, which has quickly established itself as one of the fastest facilities in the region.
