Johanna Sones, who graduated as one of the women's tennis
program's finest leaders and players, will be one of five former Tribe legends
inducted into the William and Mary Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2013 on
Saturday, April 13.
Joining Sones at the event, which will take place at the
Williamsburg Hospitality House, will be Al Albert (Men's Soccer), Emily Furia (Women's XC
& Track and Field), Jeff Hough (XC and Track and Field) and Jeanne Foster
Kuyper (Women's Gymnastics)

Johanna
Sones earned All-America honors during her career as W&M and was later
named to the Colonial Athletic Association's 25th Anniversary
women's tennis team. Sones earned her All-America honors in doubles a senior in
1997 and was named as the ITA East Region Senior Player of the Year. She capped
her senior campaign with a 32-16 singles mark and a No. 87 national ranking to
go along with a 32-10 doubles mark and a top-10 national ranking at No. 6. For
her career, Sones ranks third in W&M history with 107 doubles victories and
fifth in singles victories with 117. Her singles winning percentage at 70.5
percent ranks 11th, while her doubles winning percentage of 74.8 is
seventh in program history.
As
a freshman in 1994, Sones won the third singles and second doubles flight at
the CAA Championships. She also earned All-CAA honors in singles and doubles as
a senior in 1997. Sones helped the Tribe to four CAA team Championships and
three NCAA Tournament appearances. She competed in the NCAA Doubles
Championship on two occasions in 1995 and 1997. She finished the 1996 campaign
ranked No. 103 nationally and No. 36 nationally in doubles during her junior
season. Her 30 singles victories as a freshman rank seventh on the Tribe's
rookie record list, while her 26 doubles wins rank seventh on the freshman
list.

William and Mary Head Tennis Coach Brian Kalbas credits Sones outstanding
leadership as one of the keys to his team's unprecedented runs of success "Jo
Sones was not only a quality player, but one of the best leaders I've ever been
around. She was a driving force behind some of the most successful teams
during my tenure."
