Tribe Falls to Elon, 4-3, in CAA Championship Match

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary women's tennis saw its season come to a heartbreaking end on Sunday afternoon, falling to top-seeded Elon, 4–3, in the Coastal Athletic Association Championship match at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.

The match came down to the final court with the score tied at 3–3, as Elon's Lisa Kranec outlasted Rebeka Svabikova in a third-set tiebreak at No. 5 singles. After splitting the first two sets, Kranec pulled away in the decisive breaker, 7–1, to clinch the championship for the Phoenix.

With the result, the Tribe closes the 2026 campaign at 14–7 overall and 6–1 in conference play, finishing as the CAA runner-up after a 4–0 semifinal win over No. 3 seed Charleston on Saturday.

Elon claimed the early advantage by securing the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3, while the No. 2 match went unfinished.

William & Mary responded in singles play, winning three matches to even the score and set up the dramatic finish. Mira Kernagis put the Tribe on the board with a dominant 6–1, 6–0 victory at No. 4, and Alexia Gonzalez-Galino followed with a 6–0, 6–2 win at No. 6. Francesca Davis added a key three-set triumph at No. 2, rallying for a 6–3, 4–6, 6–4 decision to bring the match level.

Elon countered with wins at the top and third positions to keep pace, setting the stage for the deciding match at No. 5.

The tightly contested finish marked the second 4–3 meeting between the two programs this season, as the Phoenix also edged the Tribe by the same score earlier in the year.

Despite the loss, William & Mary capped another strong season, advancing to its 11th consecutive CAA Championship match.
