Emily Furia, a multiple-time All-America track and field
athlete, will be one of the five former Tribe legends inducted into the William
and Mary Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2013 on Saturday, April 13.
Joining Furia at the event, which will take place at the
Williamsburg Hospitality House, will be Al Albert (Men's Soccer), Jeanne Foster
Kuyper (Women's Gymnastics) Jeff Hough (Track and Field) and Johanna Sones (Women's
Tennis).
Tickets and more event
information can be obtained by calling Lisa Starbuck in the William and Mary
Special Events office at 757.221.1599.
Furia was a two-time
All-American in the 1,500m run, and was named to the Colonial Athletic
Association's 25th Anniversary teams in both cross country and track
and field. In addition to her individual
national success, she helped the Tribe make the 1998 NCAA Cross Country
Championships where it finished a program-best 10th in the country.
Academically, she was
named the coaches' association All-Academic teams in track in both 2000 and
2001.
In cross country, she is
one of just three William and Mary athletes to be named all-region three times
(1998, 1999, 2000). Furia was also named
the CAA Athlete of the Year in 2000, after winning the individual conference
title. In 1997, she was the first Tribe
runner to be named Rookie of the Year.
Furia was also a four-time member of the all-conference team.
On the track, in addition
to her two All-American performances, Furia also won the ECAC Championships
indoors in the mile (1999) and again outdoors at 1,500m (2000). As a senior in 2001, she was named the CAA Track
Athlete of the Year, and was also the MVP of the championship meet after
winning both the 800m and 1,500m run.
Her 1,500m title was the second in a row for Furia.
Statistically, Furia still
holds the W&M school record indoors in the 4x800m relay, and outdoors in
the mile run, the 4x1500m relay, and the distance medley relay. At the time of her graduation, she was the
record-holder indoors in the mile, and still ranks second with six of the
top-10 all-time performances. Outdoors,
she graduated as the record-holder at 1,500m and third at 800m, and still ranks
second and fourth, respectively. In the
1,500m, she graduated with the five best performances all-time, and all five
are still in the Tribe's top-12 runs ever.
