NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—The William & Mary track & field program posted a dominant day at Christopher Newport's Blue & Silver Challenge. The Tribe racked up 20 event wins on Saturday as their final tune up before hosting Colonial Relays next weekend.
W&M's dominance really showed throughout the day in the field events.
Jason Nwosu was a two-event winner, earning first in hammer throw (55.45m) where he is now the 11
th performer all-time for W&M. Nwosu also was the top college finisher in the discus (45.62m).
Megan Heidebrecht was impressive in the long jump, tying the third best performance in Tribe program history with a mark of 5.84m.
Liv Cantby, the top performer all-time for W&M in women's javelin, also grabbed top spot in that event at 43.97m.
Elizabeth Strobach not only grabbed an event win in the pole vault at 3.96m, but also posted a stadium record at TowneBank Stadium and the seventh best performance all-time for W&M she led an all-Tribe top-four with
Elizabeth Upright, Sofie Fernandez and
Fiona Basewitz finishing second, third and fourth respectively.
Keeley Suzenski posted a win in the hammer throw for the second weekend in a row in the hammer throw with a mark of 54.10m on her first throw. She also posted a victory in the discus at 47.29m, the ninth best performance in program history.
The women's shot put also went in the way of the Tribe thanks to
Ella Carlson. Carlson moved into the top-12 all-time performers in the event for W&M with a toss of 13.55m.
Alex Ust put up a personal best, 55.92m, in the javelin on his way to victory. Ust currently sits as the 14
th best performer for W&M all-time in the event.
When it was all said and done the Tribe had won 12 of the 14 field events that W&M athletes competed in. Other event winners were
Katriel Amoyaw (high jump, 1.60m) and
J.P. Mintz (pole vault, 4.27m).
On the track,
Melissa Cunningham clocked in with the fifth best time ever for a Tribe runner in the 100m. She finished in 12.05, just behind her personal best ,11.97, which is third best all-time.
Lucy Young kicked posted a time of 4:46.09 in the 1500m for a victory. She led a group of four other Tribe runners who made of the top-five.
The Tribe's top performer all-time in the 400m,
Lizzy Gregory, kept up her success in the event with a victory and a time of 58.84, while
David Seekford took the men's edition of the 400m by clocking in at 49.61.
Jacob Robinson was victorious in the 200m with a time of 22.07 which places him 14
th all-time in performers for W&M for the event.
Austin Rice finished second, by just 0.13 seconds. His performance of 22.20 is 15
th all-time for performers.
Rice also finished second in the men's 100m and his time of 10.98 puts him in the top-15 performers all-time for the program in the sprint.
The Tribe picked up three more wins on the track thanks to
Molly Coyle (800m, 2:17.15), Cunningham (200m, 25.01) and the women's 4x400m relay (4:16.21).
W&M is back in action when they host the Colonial Relays at Zable Stadium on Thursday through Saturday of this coming week. Check tribeathletics.com for more information before the meet.
