New York, N.Y. – Three William & Mary indoor track & field freshmen posted records at day one of the 2024 CAA Championships as
Jacob Robinson and
Brian Walsh each set program records, and the pair joined
Elizabeth Strobach in setting freshman records in the first day of competition.
The W&M women's team finished the first day of CAA indoor competition in fifth place among 13 CAA teams and the Tribe men's team sits at seventh of the eight programs competing on the men's side.
Heptathlon
Walsh opened the day with a strong Heptathlon performance, including a program-record-setting 1.96m mark, earning the highest Multi High Jump mark since Emil Davis' 1.94m record was set in 1985.
His Heptathlon Long Jump mark of 7.12m was good for a freshman record. The mark replaces a freshman record that had been in place since February 1991 and breaks Walsh into the top 10 in the event in program history at No. 9.
Walsh also finished third in the Hep 60m Dash with a time of 7.32. Through the first four events, Walsh's total of 2950 sits at first place. The Heptathlon will conclude Friday morning with the 60m Hurdles, Pole Vault and 1000m Run.
400m Dash
Jacob Robinson set a both program and freshman records in the men's 400m Dash with his blazing time of 48.26. With the time, Robinson qualifies to move onto the finals on Friday.
800m Run
Jonathan Kumer earned second place in the men's 800m Run prelims crossing the line in 1:51.90 with a finals-qualifying time. Kumer will compete in Friday's finals.
Mile Run
Four Tribe men qualified for the Mile Run finals as junior
Luke Ellwood posted a season-best 4:14.10 time for a top-eight finish.
Jacob Jones finished in 4:14.38 time in 10
th place,
Brendan DiStefano's 4:14.41 time was good for 11
th place and
Luke Henkel finished 12
th with a personal-record time of 4:14.61 to advance to Friday's finals.
5000m Run
Arianna DeBoer made a seventh-place finish in the 5000m Run for the women's team, finishing with a season-best time of 16:51.00.
Nate Jennings posted a personal record in the 5000m Run, earning points for the Tribe men with a time of 14:34.69. He finished eighth overall in the event.
Distance Medley Relay
The women's DRM team of
Lucy Young,
Jamison Gilmore,
Becca Harkness and
Catherine Garrison made an impressive 11:44.54 time in the event to finish second. The mark is the eighth-best women's DMR race in program history.
The W&M men's DMR team earned a third-place finish as
Sam Pritchard,
David Seekford,
Stephen Larson and
Jacob Jones ran a 9:59.83 time.
Pole Vault
A pair of Tribe women exceeded the previous meet record in the Pole Vault as
Elizabeth Strobach and
Elizabeth Upright each posted a 3.90m mark. Strobach's 3.90m mark beat her previous personal best of 3.83m, overturning her own freshman record set earlier this month. She joins Upright tied at fifth all-time in the event in W&M history.
J.P. Mintz earned points for the Tribe with a seventh-place finish in the Pole Vault. The senior posted a season-best 4.45m mark.
Weight Throw
Keeley Suzenski earned points with a 16.99m mark in the Weight Throw, positng a personal best time in the event. Previously, Suzenski has achieved the impressive then-PR mark of 16.84m three times in her career, and today she shattered it. She remains third all-time in the program's Weight Throw rankings.
In the men's Weight Throw,
Jason Nwosu made a fourth-place finish with an 18.04m mark. Along with three other athletes, Nwosu's mark beat the previous meet record of 17.84m.
Long Jump
Senior
Megan Heidebrecht earned points in the women's Long Jump, posting a 5.78m mark for a seventh-place finish.
