WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – They do say records are made to be broken. And, on Saturday, at the second day of the CAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Zable Stadium, it seemed the William & Mary squad took that particular mindset to heart.
Just over a month removed from setting a new program mark in the 4x400 relay, the quartet of
Amaya Johnson,
Lizzy Gregory,
Carly Swierbut, and
Emily Ervin shaved nearly three seconds off that time to finish in a blistering 3:35.97. The performance earned the group second place in the event and was faster than both the previous CAA meet and stadium records.
That wasn't Gregory's only record-breaking performance, either. She topped her own and program-best performance with a time of 54.20 in the 400m, after running a 54.36 at the Meet of Champions on April 15. She finished fourth in the conference championship and now owns five of the top-6 times in program history.
Joining the relay team on the podium was
Sofia Istnick, who took second in the 5,000m. Against a field of 25, the freshman ran a 16:33.99.
Keeley Suzenski also left with hardware, capturing bronze in the shot put at 15.00m (49-02.50). The throw was the second-best in Tribe history, and Suzenski now owns the top-7.
As a team, William & Mary finished third with 90 points. Elon clinched the conference crown with 185 points and Hampton was second with 124.
200m
Ervin ran a 24.11 to finish in fifth. The time is tied for fourth fastest in Tribe history, with Ervin claiming the other top three as well.
5,000m
Arianna DeBoer, who won the 10,000m on Friday evening, finished sixth in 16:35.46.
Tessa Dobrinski was 24
th (18:44.09).
4x100 Relay
The squad of Johnson, Gregory,
Anna Kessler, and
Melissa Cunningham posted a finish of 46.93 to capture eighth place. That time is also the eighth fastest in Tribe history.
Triple Jump
Megan Heidebrecht finished sixth at 12.00m (39-04.50). It was the sixth best performance by a W&M athlete in the event.
Shot Put
Ella Carlson also had a strong showing in her first CAA Outdoor Championship, finishing ninth at 13.43m (44-00.75).
Discus
Suzenski was eighth at 43.36m (142-03.2) and Carlson was 21
st at 38.42m (126-00.1).
Heptathlon
Elizabeth Dupras took eighth place and captured a team point for W&M, with 4,085 points.
