W&M Men Win Two Events Saturday at the IC4A Championships

The William & Mary men's track & field team had one of the most impressive days in school history Saturday, winning two events and picking up another two All-East honors at the IC4A Championships.  The Tribe piled up 29 points from those performances, good for second in the team standings behind only Connecticut (37).  W&M also had four qualifiers to Sunday's finals out of the prelim events held Saturday, and totalled nine personal-best performances.

Complete Results

- W&M's first championship of the day came in the weight throw, where sophomore Troy Yearwood (Chesapeake, Va.) threw a lifetime-best 19.69m (64-7.25) for the the gold medal.  Yearwood is the first athlete in school history to win the IC4A weight throw, and his mark, the ninth-best single throw in school history, ranks him second all-time at W&M.  Junior All-American KJ Cook (Buena Vista, Va.) repeated his fourth-place finish from a year ago for All-East honors, throwing 18.74m (61-5.75).

- Later in the day, redshirt-junior JP Trojan (Chardon, Ohio) ran a massive personal-best, and won the 5,000m in a time of 13:48.91.  That ranks him 26th in Division I this season, and was W&M's first sub-14 race at 5,000m indoors since 2010.  Trojan is the fourth man for the Tribe to win the IC4A 5,000m indoors, and the first since 2013.  His time was the fifth-fastest ever run indoors at W&M, and Trojan now ranks third in school history behind only All-Americans Matt Lane '01 and Jon Grey '11.

- Freshman Daniel Layton (Waynesburg, Pa.) also earned All-East honors, improving from ninth at the start of the day to finish fifth overall in the heptathlon with a freshman-record score of 4,733 points.  Yesterday, Layton was +111 on his pace from his first heptathlon back in January, and he kept accelerating throughout Saturday's three events.  First was the 60m hurdles, where he was third overall in 8.69 seconds to break his own school multi-record in the sub-event.  Next, Layton was third again in the pole vault at 4.20m (13-9.25), and he then ran 2:38.74 for second in the 1,000m run.  His total score of 4,733 broke the freshman record set by Marty Ross '10 at 4,481 back in 2006, and is tied for the fourth-best score in school history.  Layton is also tied for second all-time among Tribe athletes.

- The remainder of the Tribe's day was filled with preliminary rounds of events, with four advancing to Sunday's finals.  That includes the mile, where redshirt-sophomores Evan Goodell (St. Louis, Mich.) and Patrick Lynch (Vienna, Va.) both advanced with lifetime-best performances.  Goodell won his heat in 4:09.69, the fourth-fastest time of the day, and Lynch was second in his heat at 4:10.33, the eighth-fastest time of prelims.  Senior Cooper Leslie (Camp Hill, Pa.) also ran a personal-best, taking 11th in 4:10.04, one place out of advancing, and redshirt-sophomore Johnny Rogers (Vienna, Va.) was 26th in 4:17.09.

- In the 800m, redshirt-senior Chris Short (Toano, Va.) ran an indoor-best 1:50.54 to advance as the third-seed to tomorrow's finals.  That was the eighth-fastest race in school history indoors, and improved Short to second all-time among athletes behind only school record-holder Anders Christiansen '99.  Senior Raul Chavez-Gutierrez (Marshall, Va.) also ran an indoor-best, crossing the finish in 1:53.29 for 16th overall.  That improved him to 14th all-time among Tribe athletes.

- The final qualifier was the distance medley relay, which advanced in 10:01.50, the third-fastest time of the day.  That team included John Cacciatore (Indialantic, Fla.), Colin Grip (Acton, Mass.), Andrew Lagattuta (Glen Rock, N.J.), and Spencer Tsai (Eugene, Ore.).

- Also running in the prelims, redshirt-junior Theo Chambers (McLean, Va.) ran close to his own school records in both the 200m and the 400m.  In the shorter race, he ran 21.84 seconds, the second-fastest time in school history, and finished 16th overall.  In the quarter, Chambers' time of 48.61 seconds was likewise the second-fastest race ever at W&M, and ranked him 13th in the preliminary heats.

- The final event of the day was the prelims of the 4x400m relay, where W&M's team of Jack Bunting (Summit, N.J.), Chavez-Gutierrez, Grip, and Layton ran 3:21.28 to finish 18th overall.

The IC4A Championships continue on Sunday, starting at 9:30 a.m.
