The William & Mary men's track & field team takes its strong 49-8 (.860) season record to Annapolis on Friday afternoon for the Navy Indoor Select Meet. Action at the Wesley A. Brown Field House begins at 11 a.m. with the pole vault and the weight throw, and is scheduled to be wrapped by dinner time. The meet can be followed via live results on TribeAthletics.com.
In addition to the Tribe and the host Midshipmen, Friday's meet will include athletes from Johns Hopkins, Loyola (Md.), Maryland, Monmouth, Mount St. Mary's, and Wesley College. Leading the way both literally and figuratively are strong line-ups in the first two events of the day. In the pole vault, grad transfer
Daniel Giliomee (Bredasdorp, Western Cape, South Africa) and sophomore
Michael Fairbanks (Fairfax Station, Va.) are both already qualified for the IC4A Championships, with Giliomee clearing a season-best height of 5.05m (16-6.75) last weekend at Penn State to improve to third in school history. In just two weeks, he has improved 18 inches this season, and a similar improvement over the next two meets would put him close to the 18-foot barrier and in consideration for NCAA qualifying. His career-best is 5.40m (17-8.5). Fairbanks, meanwhile, jumped a career-best 4.90m (16-0.75) two weeks ago, and is on the cusp of cracking the 5.00m barrier as well.
In the weight throw, sophomore
KJ Cook (Buena Vista, Va.) was just three centimeters off his lifetime-best last week, and knocking on the door of 60 feet with a best of 17.77m (58-3.75). His classmate
Jason Wright (Huntington Station, N.Y.) is in the hunt to join Cook and grad student
Preston Richardson (Franktown, Va.) at the IC4A Championships, needing about seven more inches. Cook and Richardson both set indoor-bests in the shot put last week as well, as did sophomore
Connor Scott (Mechanicsville, Va.) to qualify for the IC4A Championships in that event. With those three leading the way, W&M is one of just five teams in the country with five men all over 50 feet this season in the shot put.
On the track, senior
Duncan Goodrich (Richmond, Va.) will take another crack at the school record in the 400m dash, after running 49.35 last weekend at Penn State. Only three men in school history have ever run faster indoors, including
George Ashton '00 (49.16),
Steve Boone '83 (48.97, fastest metric time), and
Walter Cooke '74 (48.5 converted from 440y, 48.7 original). He'll do so alongside fellow sprinter
Connor Atkinson (Ashburn, Va.), who was a 49.33 outdoor best in the event, and redshirt-sophomore
Theo Chambers (McLean, Va.), who ran a career-best 50.61 at Navy in December.
In the 500m dash,
Skander Ballard (Reston, Va.) will look to improve on his 1:05.80 here from December and qualify for the IC4A Championships, and redshirt-freshman
Colin Grip (Acton, Mass.) is scheduled to make his Tribe debut. Grip ran 1:21.83 in the 600m and 50.26 in the 400m in his prep career. Goodrich, Chambers, Atkinson, and Ballard are also scheduled to run the 4x400m relay, where W&M is already qualified for the IC4A Championships but the school record of 3:15.26 could be in play if all four are in top form. Reigning CAA Champion
Raul Chavez-Gutierrez (Marshall, Va.) is scheduled for his specialty event, the 800m, alongside
Cole Clark (Weston, Conn.) who ran the third-fastest 600m in school history last weekend.
