The William and Mary women's track and field team begins the winter indoor season tomorrow at the CNU Holiday Open. Action at the Freeman Center in Newport News, Va., begins at 9:00 a.m. with throws and jumps, while the first races are slated for 11 a.m.
The Tribe returns 38 athletes from last year's CAA Championship squad, in addition to 14 newcomers. Notable veterans slated to compete tomorrow include All-Americans
Emily Stites (Wyoming, Ohio) and
Elaina Balouris (Allison Park, Pa.), as well as All-East competitors
Claire Tito (Richmond, Va.),
Heather Clagett (Norfolk, Va.),
Michelle Britto (Woodbridge, Va.), and
Dylan Hassett (Alpharetta, Ga.). Sophomore
Rochelle Evans (Christiansburg, Va.), the 2013 CAA shot put champion, leads the throwing corps, and classmate
Meghan McGovern (North Wales, Pa.), a Team USA veteran and CAA 5,000m champion, is one of a passel of Tribe harriers in the 3,000m.
Based on seeding marks (which can be of varying accuracy)
, W&M is projected to earn 10 qualifications for the ECAC Championships at this weekends' meet. Most of those may come in the 3,000m, where seven runners are seeded under the qualifying time of 9:58 and three more are listed at 10:10 or better. This race last December was the fastest in school history with four runners under 9:55. Also expected to perform well are Evans, seeded second in the shot put at 13.58m (44-6.75) above the ECAC cutoff of 13.50m, and junior
Elizabeth Crafford (Darien, Conn.), seeded third in the pole vault at 3.80m (12-5.5). Crafford has surpassed the ECAC mark of 3.60m (11-9.75) 14 times so far in her career. In the 800m run, Tito is projected to finished fifth in 2:13.00, after having been an ECAC qualifier in the 500m dash and part of W&M's runner-up DMR as a freshman last winter.
