FH's Taylor Hodge Named to Phi Beta Kappa

William and Mary senior Taylor Hodge (Louisville, Ky.) was one of three Tribe athletes to be elected to Phi Beta Kappa this semester, in recognition of their outstanding academic achievement over the past four years.  Hodge, a member of the W&M field hockey team, was selected along with men's tennis player John Banks (Charlotte, N.C.) and volleyball/basketball standout Jaclyn McKenna (Huntington, N.Y.) as part of the 46 honorees for the fall 2013 semester.

Hodge was a first-team All-CAA selection at forward in 2013, helping the Tribe to an 8-11 record and a spot in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament semifinals.  She led the team with 10 goals, the most for a W&M player since 2004, and also added in two assists and a defensive save in her final campaign.  Her goals included the game-winner against Towson, as well as both goals in the 2-1 overtime upset of No. 18 American, and Hodge's defensive save helped preserve the 2-1 upset of No. 5 Virginia.  In the final regular-season contest at Busch Field Hodge took 13 shots, second-most ever in school history, and scored the tying goal that allowed W&M to beat Hofstra in double-overtime.  Hodge was honored as part of the NFHCA All-Academic team every season, as well as earning the W&M Provost's Award (cumulative GPA over 3.5) each of the past three years.  A kinesiology and health sciences major with a pre-med concentration, Hodge will be attending medical school next year at the University of Louisville with a goal of becoming a surgeon.

Phi Beta Kappa was founded December 5, 1776 at William and Mary as the first Greek-letter fraternity and is now the nation's oldest and most prestigious collegiate honor society with chapters at more than 280 colleges and universities.  According to the organization's website, "Phi Beta Kappa celebrates and advocates excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Its campus chapters invite for induction the most outstanding arts and sciences students at America's leading colleges and universities. The Society sponsors activities to advance these studies — the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences — in higher education and in society at large."

With three electees this fall, the Tribe athletic department has now had 61 athletes named to PBK since 1990 and 257 total (since 1899). Hodge, Banks, and McKenna will be honored during a brief ceremony Wednesday night during the men's basketball game vs. Richmond, and the official induction ceremony will take place on Thursday night, Dec. 5, at the Wren Building.
