William and Mary senior
Jaclyn McKenna (Huntington, N.Y.) was one of three Tribe athletes to be elected to Phi Beta Kappa this semester, in recognition of their outstanding academic achievement over the past four years. McKenna, who played on the Tribe basketball team for four years and spent this year on the volleyball squad, was selected along with men's tennis player
John Banks (Charlotte, N.C.) and field hockey standout
Taylor Hodge (Louisville, Ky.) as part of the 46 honorees for the fall 2013 semester.
McKenna was a four-year starter on the women's basketball team in the post, and was named to the CAA All-Academic first team each of her last three seasons. She ranks fifth all-time in field goal percentage (.482), blocked shots (84), and games played (118), and finished her career with 757 points and 500 rebounds. McKenna scored a career-high 24 points against VCU in 2011, and had 11 rebounds four times. When she exhausted her eligibility in that sport, she switched over to volleyball where she was a reserve middle-blocker for the Tribe in 2013 appearing in 11 matches. McKenna's top performance came against Campbell, where she had 11 kills and two blocks while hitting .290. A chemistry major who has earned the W&M Provost's Award (for having a GPA over 3.5) each of the last four years, McKenna plans to attend medical school.
Phi Beta Kappa was founded December 5, 1776 at William and Mary as the first Greek-letter fraternity and is now the nation's oldest and most prestigious collegiate honor society with chapters at more than 280 colleges and universities. According to the
organization's website, "
Phi Beta Kappa celebrates and advocates excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Its campus chapters invite for induction the most outstanding arts and sciences students at America's leading colleges and universities. The Society sponsors activities to advance these studies — the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences — in higher education and in society at large."
With three electees this fall, the Tribe athletic department has now had 61 athletes named to PBK since 1990 and 257 total (since 1899). McKenna, Hodge, and Banks will be honored during a brief ceremony Wednesday night during the men's basketball game vs. Richmond, and the official induction ceremony will take place on Thursday night, Dec. 5, at the Wren Building.
