PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Sophomore
Ava Rossman scored the first goal of her career in the second quarter, but William & Mary field hockey suffered a 5-1 loss at Drexel in the final CAA match of the season on Friday afternoon.
Off the Tribe's first penalty corner of the game, senior
Amelia Morgan's initial shot from the top of the circle was blocked by Drexel's Halle Geiger. The rebound bounced to the middle of the area, and Rossman followed it up into the left side boards for her first collegiate goal. The marker at the 23:36 mark drew the Tribe within 3-1.
Drexel scored three times in the opening quarter, all off penalty corners. Valentine Van Hellem tallied the Dragons' first two goals, including one just 28 seconds into the match. Van Hellem along with Pili Lemoine provided the assists on Natali Foster's hard shot from the top of the circle to give Drexel a 3-0 lead 12:31 into the contest.
Lemoine answered as she scored from near the penalty spot off a pass from Lauren Kushma just under four minutes remaining in the opening half. The tally reestablished a three-goal margin for the home team.
Lemoine added the final goal of the afternoon just over four minutes into the third quarter to provide the final 5-1 margin.
Drexel outshot W&M, 14-4, on the afternoon with all four Tribe chances coming on frame. The Dragons also generated seven penalty corners to one for W&M. Junior goalkeeper
Alexandra de Jesus finished with three saves in goal, while sophomore
Emma Cari played the final 15 minutes and recorded a pair of stops.
The Tribe wraps up season at La Salle on Sunday. The match is slated for a 12:30 p.m. start time at The Proving Grounds in Conshohocken, Pa. It will be streamed on ESPN+.
