CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. - William & Mary field hockey closed out the season with a strong 3-2 win over Atlantic-10 foe La Salle on Sunday afternoon at the Proving Grounds.
Junior
Anya Green scored twice in the opening half, her first two career goals, while senior
Natasha Browning tallied the game-winner in the third quarter.
The Tribe (2-15) struck first on Green's first career tally with just over two minutes remaining in the first quarter. Off a penalty corner, the Tribe pressure resulted in a penalty stroke. Green stepped to the spot and converted to give W&M a 1-0 lead.
Just over three minutes into the second quarter, it was again Green to extend the Tribe lead to 2-0. Off a penalty corner, Green cut toward the cage from the top of the circle and redirected a shot turned pass from senior
Emme Schwartz into the left side to give W&M a 2-0 lead at the 18:12 mark.
La Salle (7-11) responded with a goal less than two minutes later. Jeanne Legast caught W&M on the counter, and after a hesitation, scored into the left side of the cage to close the gap to 2-1.
The Explorers pulled even at two in the 26th minute. Junior goalkeeper
Alexandra de Jesus made a save off the initial shot from the top of the circle from a penalty corner. The rebound made its way to Natalie Wilson at the near post who finished to tie the match at two.
Five minutes into the second half, the Tribe once again used the penalty corner to its advantage this time for what proved to be the game winner. On the play, Browning redirected a hard shot from the top of the circle by senior
Amelia Morgan to give W&M a 3-2 lead. It was Browning's first goal of the season and first career game-winner, while it was Morgan's first career assist.
La Salle held a slim 13-12 advantage in shots. Each team posted nine penalty corners on the day. Browning led W&M with four shots, while Green at three.
de Jesus finished with six saves to bring her season total to 149 saves. The total ranks eighth in W&M history and is the most in the CAA since 2021.
