The William and Mary women's cross country team finished second Saturday at the 2011 Colonial Athletic Association Championships, totalling 45 points to James Madison's 32. Host Georgia State was a distant third with 89 points, with Towson (99) and Delaware (149) rounding out the top five of the 10-team race. JMU's Katie Harman won the individual six-kilometer title with a time of 21:18.
The Tribe was led once again by sophomore
Elaina Balouris (Allison Park, Pa.), who finished second overall in 21:43. Freshman
Jess Cygan (Bethlehem, Pa.) was just off the podium in fourth overall, timing 22:21 for all-conference honors in her first championships appearance. Also making the 12-runner All-CAA squad was
Michelle Britto (Woodbridge, Va.), who finished eighth in 22:42. Freshman
Dylan Hassett (Alpharetta, Ga.), making her first in-uniform appearance in front of family and friends, was just outside of the all-conference cutoff with her 14th-place showing in 23:03. Rounding out the team's scoring line-up was redshirt-freshman
Lanie Smith (Reston, Va.), 17th in 23:11, and seniors
Heather Beichner (Cary, N.C.) and
Kristen Dietz (Springfield, Va.) were 20th and 21st, respectively. Also competing for the College on Saturday was
Kathleen Lautzenheiser (Midlothian, Va.), 23rd overall, as well as
Lauren Strapp (Raleigh, N.C.) in 29th and
Christina Lee (Sterling, Va.) in 41st.
William and Mary will host its annual Massey Cancer Center 5K Fundraiser next Saturday, November 5th, before returning to intercollegiate competition at the Southeast Region Championships in two weeks, on November 12th in Louisville, Kentucky.
