Tribe Set for NCAA Southeast Region Cross Country Championships on Friday in Charlottesville

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William & Mary cross country makes the short trip to Charlottesville to compete in the NCAA Southeast Region Championships on Friday. The women's 6K starts the event at 10 a.m. with the men's 10K to follow at 11 a.m.

Scouting the Region 
The Southeast Region Championships consist of teams from Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The following teams are set to compete in the meet:

Appalachian State, Bellarmine, Charleston Southern, Charlotte, Clemson, Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, Davidson, Duke, East Carolina, Elon, Eastern Kentucky, Furman, Gardner-Webb, George Mason, Hampton, High Point, James Madison, Kentucky, Liberty, Longwood, Louisville, Morehead State, Murray State, Norfolk State, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, North Carolina State, Northern Kentucky, Presbyterian, Radford, Richmond, South Carolina, South Carolina State, Southern Indiana, The Citadel, UNC Asheville, UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Greensboro, USC Upstate, Virginia, VCU, VMI, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Western Carolina, Western Kentucky, William & Mary, Winthrop, Wofford.
 
The women's 6K features five nationally-ranked teams in No. 12 NC State, No. 13 North Carolina, No. 16 Virginia, No. 20 South Carolina, and No. 29 Duke. Four nationally-ranked men's teams will compete in the regional, including No. 4 Virginia, No. 12 Wake Forest, No. 24 Virginia Tech, and No. 30 Eastern Kentucky.
 
The top-two teams from the Southeast Region Championship along with the top two from each of the other eight regions automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships, Nov. 22, in Columbia, Mo. The other 14 at-large selections will be announced during the NCAA Cross Country Selection Show on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 5 p.m.
 
Individually, the first four regional finishers not from an automatic qualifying or at-large team also secure an auto-bid to the championships. In total, 38 individuals will be selected to participate through an automatic qualifier and at-large selection process.

Parking tickets are presale only on VirginiaSports.com. The price of parking is $20. NO pets will be allowed at Panorama Farms for the NCAA Regional Championships.

Tribe News and Notes
- Last time out at the CAA Championships, the Tribe women's program finished as the league runner-up for the second consecutive season behind Elon. Senior Perry Irons led the way once again, placing second overall to earn All-CAA honors. Sophomore Molly Weithman garnered all-league distinction for the second-straight season, finishing in 13th place. Senior Kelly Ann Sutterfield was 17th followed by freshman Veronica Znajda and sophomore Maddie Gypson in 20th and 21st, respectively.
 
-  Irons turned in the sixth-fastest 6K time in school history, crossing the line 20:01.2 at the CAA Championship in her runner-up performance. It was the fastest for a Tribe runner since Emily Stites posted a time of 19:57.5 at NCAA Southeast Region Championships in 2015.
 
- On the men's side, the Tribe had four runners finish among the top 15 to earn All-CAA honors. Junior Hayes Trapp finished third at the championship for the second consecutive season, while senior Brendan DiStefano received his second all-league award placing 10th. The freshman duo of Caleb Wilcox and Eli Phillips finished 13th and 15th, respectively, to garner the honor. As a team, the Tribe finished fourth behind Hofstra, Northeastern, and Stony Brook.
 
- On a league-high three occasions, Irons was named the CAA Runner of the Week. She garnered the most recent accolade after finishing eighth at Princeton Fall Classic (Oct. 17). Irons also received the nod after placing fourth at the Spider Alumni Open (Aug. 30) and second at the Virginia Invitational (Sept. 12).
 
- Trapp tallied his second CAA Runner of the Week honor after leading the men's team with a 14th-place showing at the Princeton Fall Classic. He covered the 8K course in a time of 23:25.0, which was his career-best 8K time and the fastest time for a Tribe runner in over 15 years. Trapp won the honor on Sept. 16 as well after finishing 14th at the Virginia Invitational.
 
- Wilcox also earned CAA Runner of the Week honors on Sept. 2 after leading the Tribe at the Spider Alumni Open with a 15th-place finish.  

- At the Southeast Region Championship last season, the women finished 14th in a 34-team field with four runners among the top 100. Weithman is the Tribe's top returning runner after finishing 82nd last season, while Gypson was 104th.
 
- The Tribe men's team finished 20th at the regional last year with Trapp leading the way in finishing 80th.
