WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary cross country opens the championship season at the 2025 CAA Championships on Friday. The event is slated for Ocean County Park in Lakewood, N.J.The women's 6K is set for 10 a.m. with the men's 8K to follow at 11 a.m.

The Championship Field
The CAA sits at 11 teams competing for the men's cross country championship – W&M, Campbell, Charleston, Elon, Hampton, Hofstra, Monmouth, UNCW, North Carolina A&T, Northeastern, and Stony Brook – and 12 in the women's championships – adding Towson. Stony Brook is the three-time defending champion on the men's side, while Northeastern won its first title, snapping Elon's streak of five championships in a row.
The Tribe, which is No. 15 in the Southeast Region, is one of four regionally-ranked teams in the men's field with Northeastern (No. 10 in Northeast Region), Stony Brook (No. 15 in Northeast Region) and Monmouth (No. 14 in Mid-Atlantic Region). Elon is the only regionally-ranked team in the women's race, coming in at No. 11 in the Southeast Region. The Tribe, who was ranked four out of five weeks in the Southeast Region, is one of five other teams that have been ranked regionally this season. Towson (Mid-Atlantic Region), Monmouth (Mid-Atlantic Region), Northeastern (Northeast Region), and Stony Brook (Northeast Region) have been ranked regionally this season as well. The top 15 runners at the championship will earn All-CAA honors.
Women's Program at the CAA Championships
- The Tribe women's team has 23 CAA Championships overall, the third-most in any sport in conference history. W&M is looking for its first league crown since 2018.
- Last season, W&M finished as the league runner-up in the women's championship just 10 points behind Northeastern. Five runners earned all-CAA honors, including
Sofia Istnick and
Molly Weithman. Istnick is a three-time All-CAA selection.
Men's Program at the CAA Championships
- Overall, the Tribe men's team has won 28 CAA Championships, the most in any sport in conference history. Combined with 15 conference titles from the Southern Conference, W&M has 43 total league championships.
- W&M has won 21 of the last 25 CAA Championships, including a streak of 20 in a row between 2000-19. The Tribe has placed in the top three every year dating back to 1988. Last season, W&M finished third at the championship behind Stony Brook and Northeastern with the top three separated by only six points.
- Four runners earned All-CAA honors last season, including
Hayes Trapp who finished third overall.
Carson Rackley (9th) and
Brendan DiStefano (12th) garnered All-CAA honors for the first time in their careers.
Tribe News and Notes
- Last time out, the women's team placed 12th in a 25-team field that featured 18 regionally-ranked teams at the Princeton Fall Classic. W&M topped six regionally-ranked teams at the event. On the men's side, the Tribe finished 19th in a 31-team field that included three nationally-ranked teams and 23 regionally-ranked foes. The Green and Gold finished ahead of five regionally-ranked teams, including defending CAA Champion Stony Brook.
- For the third time this season, senior
Perry Irons was named the CAA Runner of the Week after earning another top-10 performance at the Princeton Fall Classic. She turned in an impressive time of 20:10.7 to finish eighth in the 270-runner field. Her time was the fastest in a 6K for a Tribe runner since Emily Stites at the 2015 CAA Championship (20:00.2). The three CAA Runner of the Week honors are tied for the more in the CAA this season. She also took home the honor on Sept. 2 and Sept. 16.

- Junior
Hayes Trapp tallied his second CAA Runner of the Week honor after leading the men's team with a 14th-place showing at the Princeton Fall Classic. He covered the 8K course in a time of 23:25.0, which was his career-best 8K time and the fastest time for a Tribe runner in over 15 years. Trapp won the honor on Sept. 16 as well.
- The women's team won the Fire Tower Project Run, topping an 11-team field on Oct. 3. In her first career 6K race, Irons took home the individual crown, covering the course in 20:49.2. Sophomore
Molly Weithman earned the best finish of her young career, garnering third (21:42.3), while senior
Kelly Ann Sutterfield (6th) and freshman
Veronica Znajda (9th) both finished in the top 10.
- Redshirt freshman
Caleb Wilcox earned CAA Runner of the Week honors on Sept. 2 after topping the Tribe at the Spider Alumni Open with a 15th-place finish.
