DURHAM, N.C. – Fantastic freshmen.
First-year standout
Austin Rice finished just shy of the William & Mary freshman 400m record, posting a PR time of 48.91 and taking second place in the event at Day 3 of the Duke Invitational. And while he didn't take the top mark, his time was fast enough to move him into No. 12 on the Tribe's all-time performers list.
He wasn't the only young Tribe athlete to post a solid performance on Saturday, either.
In the shot put,
Jason Nwosu continued his strong season with a top-10 finish at 14.74m (48-4.5).
Back on the track,
Jonathan Kumer posted a PR of 1:54.89 in the 800m, rounding out a strong showing by those donning Green and Gold.
Stephen Larson ran a season's best 1:53.45 in the same event to finish eighth, while
Jacob Jones was 12
th (1:54.22), and
Sam Pritchard was 13
th at 1:54.30.
W&M veterans also had good days of their own as
Jackson Cooley ran another impressive 100m. The junior crossed the finish line in 10.77, earning him a third-place finish among a field of 20 athletes. Then, in the decathlon,
Daniel Layton finished second with 5,950 points. His second day of competition was highlighted by a PR in the pole vault at 4.20m (13-9.25) and javelin at 38.61m (126-8.0).
