Swimming Wraps Up WVU Invitational Saturday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The William & Mary men's and women's swim teams wrapped up the WVU Invitational on Saturday as sophomore Sophia Heilen earned her third event win in as many days and the Tribe men and women landed a trio of top-ten relays. 

Ellie Scherer earned a top-three finish in the 200 Breast and four swimmers advanced to championship finals in their respective events. On the women's side, Heilen moved on to the A heat in the 200 fly and Scherer and Kaitlyn Conover-Emmert advanced in the 200 Breast, while Cole Younger advanced to the championship heat in the 200 Breast for the men.

Both the men's and women's teams ranked sixth in the standings over the course of the event, the women finished ahead of 10 teams and the men finished ahead of six teams participating in the invitational.
 
Women's 200 Back
Starting off the final day of competition strong, four women advanced to the finals in the 200 Back, including a consolation final qualifying time by Kat Vanbourgondien. Finishing in 2:03.01, Vanbourgondien earned her second seed in a point-scoring heat of the invitational.

Freshman Julie Addison's 2:04.73 time was good for a bonus final seed and Alexis Bonfield and Sarah Rice each earned a place in the D final, clocking in with 2:06.46 and 2:06.52 times, respectively.

Finals
Getting underway in the last finals session of the weekend, Rice shaved a second and a half off her time to place third in the D final, posting a time of 2:05.77. Vanbourgondien's 28.43 50 split was the second fastest in the event finals.
 
Men's 200 Back
Five of the Tribe's men moved onto the final session in the 200 Back. Rouzie led the Tribe with a seed in the consolation final after recording a 1:49.64 finish. Kent Codding, Conor Sokolowsky and freshman David Yune all qualified for a spot in the bonus final.

Only one hundredth of a second separated Codding and Sokolowsky's times as they clocked in at 1:51.58 and 1:51.59, respectively. Yune joined them in the bonus heat after swimming 1:52.31 in the prelims. Micah Lowe's 1:53.69 time advanced him to the D finals.

Finals
Rouzie finished second in the consolation final in 1:49.31, taking his prelim time down by .33 and finishing only four hundredths of a second behind the top time in the heat.

Codding cut two and a half seconds from his prelim time to finish first in the bonus final with a time of 1:49.12. Yune dropped 1.2 from his prelim mark to swim a 1:51.11 and Lowe took 1.4 off of his own time, finishing in 1:52.29.
 
Women's 100 Freestyle
With six women advancing to finals in the 100 Free, the Tribe tied Navy for the most top-32 seeds in the event, including four freshmen. Caroline Burgeson (51.43) and Flynn Truskett (51.45) finished eighth and ninth for the top two seeds in the consolation final.

A pair advanced to the bonus final as Zoe Arakelian swam in 51.84 and Emmerson Dingwerth posted a 52.01 mark. The freshman duo of Sarah Dunham and Meghan Rourke rounded out the women's qualifiers, securing seeds in the D finals. Dunham finished in 52.18 and Rourke advanced with a 52.22 mark.

Finals
Burgeson's qualifying time was a personal best, but she shaved over half a second off that time for a new personal best time of 50.79. Finishing first in the consolation heat, Burgeson posted the fourth-best time in the final.

Truskett dropped two tenths of a second from her prelim time, finishing in 51.21. In the D final, Rourke finished at the top of the heat with a 51.46 time, shaving .36 from her prelim mark, and Dunham also improved her time with a 51.81 swim in the final.
 
Men's 100 Freestyle
Freshman Aiden Bond was the lone qualifier in the men's 100 Free, finishing in the top ten to advance to the consolation finals. This was Bond's third finals-qualifying time of the weekend and marked the second event in which he advanced to the consolation heat. 

Finals
His finals time was just two hundredths of a second behind his own personal best mark as he cut over three tenths off his prelim time, finishing in 45.14. 
 
Women's 200 Breast
A pair of Tribe women advanced to the championship final, with four moving onto the finals session in the 200 Breast. Scherer's prelim time of 2:16.89 was top-three to move on and Conover-Emmert secured a championship seed with her 2:19.39 finish.

Lindsay Juhlin and Natalia Rongione both advanced to the bonus final as Juhlin posted a 2:24.24 time and Rongione clocked in at 2:24.74.

Finals
Scherer cut her time by over a minute from the prelim session to place third in the event, earning 27 points for the Tribe women. Her 2:15.50 time was good for a personal best, beating her previous best mark (2:16.44) from the 2023 CAA Championships by nearly a second.

Conover-Emmert earned 22 points for the Tribe, finishing in 2:22.51. Juhlin posted a 2:22.81 time to finish third in the bonus heat, shaving just shy of a second and a half from her prelim time. Also improving her time, Rongione dropped .40 from her prelim mark for a 2:24.34 finish.
 
Men's 200 Breast
Earning a championship seed for the Tribe men, Cole Younger was joined by Jono Bennett and Noah Spain in the final session of the 200 Breast. Younger posted a season-best 2:02.13 time to earn the sixth seed in the championship final. Bennett's 2:03.37 time qualified him for the consolation final and Spain earned a seed in the bonus final with a 2:08.04 finish.

Jasha Heide (2:09.96) and Brock Rempe (2:10.28) were just shy of a finals seed, but both earned alternate qualifying times. 

Finals
Younger finished just one hundredth of a second over his prelim mark, posting a 2:02.14 time to earn 24 points for the Tribe men's team. Bennett finished third in the consolation final, clocking in at 2:02.54 and beating his prelim time by nearly half a second.
 
Women's 200 Fly
Heilen spearheaded the five women moving onto the 200 Fly finals as she qualified for a championship seed with a time of 2:00.03. Lauren Klinefelter (2:04.75) and Erin Langenburg (2:05.21) each earned a seed in the consolation heat.

Freshman Clara Bodnar clocked in at 2:06.67 to secure a spot in the bonus final and Taylor Stockard swam a 2:09.54 time to advance to the D final.

Finals
Earning her third win of the invitational, Heilen swam a 1:59.01 to take over a second off her prelim time and beat the next-fastest time by 1.24.

Langenburg shaved .18 from her prelims time for a 2:05.03 finish in the consolation final while Bodnar tied for third in the bonus heat, dropping over a second from her prelim mark to earn a 2:05.49 time. Stockard also improved her mark, clocking in at 2:09.21.
 
Men's 200 Fly
A pair of Tribe freshmen qualified for finals in the 200 Fly as Zach LeMay's 1:52.79 finish earned him a seed in the bonus heat and Thor Dyke advanced to the D final with a time of 1:54.94.

Gavin Lamoureux swam a 1:56.00, just shy of a final qualifying time, but good for an alternate seed.

Finals
Dyke took 1.31 seconds of his prelim time to finish second in the D final with a time of 1:53.63
 
1,650 Freestyle
Katt finished in the top ten in the 1,650 Free, posting a 1:18.23 finish in the distance event and earning 17 points for the women. On the men's side, Will Glass swam a 16.17.08 to earn six points for the Tribe.
 
Women's 400 Free Relay 
Two of the women's 400 Free Relay teams posted top-ten times in the final event of the evening. The quartet of Burgeson (24.58), Truskett, Heilen and Rourke finished in fourth place with a time of 3:24.95, cutting nearly a second from their seed time. Earning a tenth-place time, the team of Arakelian, Dingwerth, Chloe Swatts and Dunham posted a 3:28.58 finish to cut over three seconds from their seed time.
 
Men's 400 Free Relay  
To conclude the meet on a high note, the Tribe's A Relay earned a top-ten finish and a pair of relay teams combined for 72 points. The relay team of Bond (21.23), Yune, Cullicott and Massari finished ninth with a time of 3:01.93.

The quartet of Alex Valliere, Colin Mamaril, Logan McDonald and Codding rounded out the scoring with a 12th-place, 3:03.83 finish. The B relay cut over eight seconds from their seed time.
