NEWPORT NEWS, Va. and FAIRFAX, Va. – The William & Mary women's track and field team captured top finishes after competing in two-way split at the New Captains Classic & Combined Events hosted by Christopher Newport and the Mason Spring Invitational hosted by George Mason on Saturday.
How It Happened:
New Captains Classic & Combined Events
- Senior Claire Bailey won the heptathlon collecting a total of 3,511 points. Bailey pulled through a strong performance in the (hep.) javelin throw, winning the event with a throw of 32.36m (106-02). Senior Monay James finished second in the heptathlon with a total of 3,430 points.
- Over in the long jump sophomore, Megan Heidebrecht won the event with a jump of 5.51m.
- Sophomore Olesya Sitkowski won the pole vault event with a mark of 3.65m (11.-11.75), while rookie Sophie Fernandez finished in second at 3.50 (11-5.75). Freshman Fiona Basewitz also recorded a personal best in the event at 3.35m (10-11.75).
- In the triple Jump freshman, Dana Abraham won the event, recording a new personal best at 11.65m, while sophomore Megan Heidebrecht finished second overall at 11.42m.
- Rounding it for the Tribe in the high jump rookie Ellie St. Martin tied for first overall at 1.60m just shy of her PR.
Mason Spring Invitational
- Kicking it off in field events red-shirt sophomore Keeley Suzenski completed a successful day finishing in the top four of every event she competed in. In the hammer throw, Suzenski finished fourth overall with a mark of 52.14m while placing third in the shot put at 13.72m. Suzkenski rounded out her reign after placing fourth in the discus at 41.90m.
- Senior Chelsea Wallace recorded a strong performance for the Tribe after placing seventh overall in the hammer throw with a mark of 48.01m and finished ninth overall in the shot put at 12.71m. Wallace completed her top 10 performance in the discus throw placing sixth at 40.48.
- In the javelin throw sophomore, Zoe Metzger placed third in the event with a throw of 37.2m.
- Sophomore Mary Gregory finished second in the 400-meter dash. Her time off 55.65 now stands as the seventh-fastest time in school history. Freshman Emily Ervin won her heat at 55.70 and reigns as the eighth fastest time in W&M history.
- In the 100-meter dash freshman, Anna Kessler recorded a personal best at 12.53.
- Over in the 200-meter dash sophomore, Carly Swierbut finished second in her group at 25.15, while junior Amya Johnson finished with the 10th best time of the day at 25.23.
- Sophomore Molly Coyle recorded a new personal best in the 800-meter at 2:17.88.
- Rounding it out for the Green & Gold in the 1500-meter run freshman Lucy Young recorded a personal best at 4:42.52.
