WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary head coach Dane Fischer announced the addition of graduate transfer guard Anders Nelson (Edina, Minn. / Edina / St. Thomas) to the Tribe program. Nelson spent the last four years playing at St. Thomas University in Minnesota and will play his extra season of college basketball in Williamsburg.
"We are very excited to welcome Anders to the Tribe Basketball family," Fischer said. "He is an extremely tough and skilled guard who is capable of scoring and creating for others. Anders has been a tremendous leader over the course of his career and we are looking forward to him having that same impact for us."
Nelson enjoyed a standout career for the Tommies, averaging 15.2 points per game and totaling 1,426 career points. He also posted 394 rebounds (4.2 rpg), 310 assists (3.3 apg) and 118 steals (1.3 spg) during his career as well. Nelson scored in double figures in 73 of his 94 career games at St. Thomas.
"Anders can play both guard positions and has a great feel for how to play in ballscreens," Fischer added. "He is a very competitive player and his coaches rave about his communication and focus on the floor. Anders gives us another playmaker and scorer in the backcourt for the upcoming season."
As a team during Nelson's four seasons, St. Thomas amassed a record of 67-28 (.705), including a pair of MIAC regular season championships and two appearances in the NCAA Division III Sweet 16. He was named the National Division III Freshman of the Year in 2019. Nelson was also a two-time all-conference and all-region selection during his time at St. Thomas.
As a senior in 2021-22, Nelson averaged 14.9 points per game for St. Thomas in their first season as a transitional Division I program in the Summit League. He notched a season-high 30 points in the Tommies' first DI victory over Saint Francis Brooklyn. Nelson also finished with 29 points at Atlantic-10 foe Fordham.
During the COVID-19 shortened season in 2020-21, Nelson led the MIAC in scoring at 19.4 points per game, helping the Tommies to a 7-0 record and a final D3 national ranking of No. 2.
Over his career at St. Thomas, Nelson shot the ball well at every level, connecting at a 46.6% from the floor, 35.4% from 3 and 81% at the free throw line. In 2021, he ranked 37th nationally shooting 87.5% from the free throw line. As a sophomore in 2019-20, Nelson connected as a 42.9% clip from 3-point range, hitting 51 triples.
