Chris Mullins and Matteus Case Join William & Mary Men’s Basketball

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary head men's basketball coach Dane Fischer announced the additions of 6-3 guard Chris Mullins (Grand Prairie, Texas / Mansfield Timberview / Rice) and 6-5 guard Matteus Case (Pickering, Ontario / Chaminade Prep / Providence) to the Tribe program. Mullins will enroll in graduate school at the prestigious W&M Raymond A. Mason School of Business after spending the previous four years as a standout at Rice University, while Case joins the Tribe as a sophomore after spending last season at BIG EAST Champion Providence College.

"We are thrilled to welcome Chris and Matteus to the William & Mary Basketball family," Fischer said. "Both of these young men come to Williamsburg from high level college programs and will be great additions to our campus and community."

Mullins was a 1,000-point scorer during his career at Rice and was named to the Conference USA All-Rookie Team in 2019. He became the 10th player in Rice history to record 1,000 points, 300 rebounds and 250 assists in a career. Mullins started 102 of 116 games over his four seasons at the Houston institution.

"Chris joins us from Rice where he had an incredibly successful academic and athletic career," Fischer said. "He was a four-year starter, scored over 1,000 points and was selected to the Conference USA All Freshman Team. In addition to his success on the court, he was named to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll each of the past three seasons."

As a senior last season, Mullins scored in double figures on 13 occasions and helped the Owls to a berth in the College Basketball Invitational. He tallied a career-high 25 points in a win over Evansville in the Gulf Coast Showcase and collected a double-double in a win over New Orleans with 11 points and 10 assists. For his career, Mullins scored in doubles figures in 56 games.

"Chris impacts the game in a number of ways because of his ability to get in the paint and score or facilitate," Fischer said. "He is also a high-level defender that is capable of guarding multiple positions. We expect Chris to bring a tremendous amount of leadership to our team next year given his experience at the collegiate level."

Academically, Mullins was a three-time Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll selection. He will earn his degree with a double major in stats and sports management from Rice in May and will pursue his master's in business analytics at W&M.

Case enjoyed a strong prep and international career prior to his time at Providence. He competed for the Canadian U16 National Team at the 2017 FIBA Americas Championship, helping the team to the sliver medal.

"Matteus joins our team after spending this past season on one of the most successful teams in Providence history," Fischer said. "He helped the Friars earn a Big East Regular Season Championship and a trip to the Sweet 16."

During his high school career, Case was a two-time MVP at Pine Ridge Secondary School in Pickering Ontario. He spent his final two seasons at Chaminade College Preparatory School (2018-20) in St. Louis, Mo. As a senior, Case was a team captain and helped lead Chaminade to a St. Louis District title and a 21-7 record, averaging 10.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.

"Matteus is a guard who can catch and shoot as well as put the ball on the floor," Fischer said. "He has the ability to score in multiple ways and can make plays with the ball in his hands.  He has great size and has the ability to defend. We are excited about the hard work and toughness that Matteus will bring to our program."

Case and Mullins give the Tribe a trio of incoming transfers along with 6-8 transfer Noah Collier (Mullica Hill, N.J. / Westtown School (Pa.) / Pittsburgh). W&M will also welcome a trio of incoming freshmen to the Tribe roster for the 2022-23 season in 6-7 guard/forward Jack Karasinski (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central), 6-10 forward Charlie Williams (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) and 6-5 guard Chase Lowe (Charlotte, N.C. / Weddington).
