The William & Mary women's track & field team showed it is on strong pace Saturday at the JMU Invitational, two weeks ahead of the Colonial Athletic Association Championships which will also be held at JMU. The Tribe won three events Saturday, including a sweep of the two relays, and broke both a school record and a freshman record.
The first event of the day was the 4x100m relay, and W&M set the tone earlier with a dominant 46.77 showing for the win. That performance was also the fastest ever for the Tribe, breaking the school record of 46.85 set back in 2004. The team Saturday included
Felecia Hayes (Chesapeake, Va.),
Amaya Johnson (Sterling, Va.),
Jadyn Currie (Virginia Beach, Va.), and
Chelsea Mitchell (Canton, Conn.). Mitchell and Hayes came back a short time later to finish fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100m dash. Mitchell ran a season-best 12.11 seconds to break the freshman record she set two weeks ago at home, and also turned in the third-fastest time in school history while ranking third all-time among athletes. Hayes' time of 12.22 seconds was just 0.01 off her best, and was the 10th-fastest single race ever for W&M.
In the 200m dash, it was Johnson's turn to shine, winning the event in a lifetime-best 24.30 seconds. That is the second-fastest single race ever for W&M, and ranks Johnson second all-time among athletes. Freshman
Mary Gregory (Reston, Va.) was fourth overall in 24.89 seconds, and Mitchell was eighth in 25.11 seconds. Gregory now ranks sixth all-time in the event, while Mitchell checks in at No. 10. Gregory also ran on the Tribe's 4x400m that won in 3:48.15, the fourth-fastest single race ever. She was joined in that event by
Gabby Runge (Midlothian, Va.),
Makenzie Joiner (Mechanicsville, Va.), and
Grace Bir (Falls Church, Va.), all three of whom also ran the open 400m. In the individual race, Runge was fourth overall in 57.55, just ahead of Joiner (57.65 for fifth), and Bir rounded out the roster with a seventh-place 57.82.
Over in the field events, redshirt-junior
Taylor E. Jones (Fairfax Station, Va.) jumped a lifetime-best 11.95m (39-2.5), finishing second overall. That was tied for the eighth-longest jump ever for W&M, and ranks Jones fifth all-time among athletes. Freshman
Megan Heidebrecht (Amissville, Va.) was seventh in 11.25m (36-11) in her first-ever attempt at the triple, and now ranks 13th in school history. Heidebrecht also competed in the long jump, hitting the sand at 5.19m (17-0.5) for ninth overall.
In the 400m hurdles, grad student
Josie Landis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished second overall with a lifetime-best time of 1:03.54. That ranks her 10th all-time among Tribe athletes. Senior
Aly Logue (Doylestown, Pa.) was ninth overall in a lifetime-best 1:08.32. In the shot put, redshirt-sophomore
Claire Bailey (Fairfax, Va.) set an outdoor-best, finishing ninth overall at 12.43m (40-9.5), and now ranks 13th in school history. The 800m run saw
Taylor D. Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) finish fourth overall in 2:11.57, and in the 1,500m, freshman
Lily Schlossberg (Virginia Beach, Va.) finished third with a time of 4:37.59. Her classmate
Annie Wicker (Sewickley, Pa.) was close behind, running 4:44.08 for sixth. Back in the throwing fields,
