W&M Swimming Takes on Davidson in a Virtual Meet Saturday

The William & Mary swimming teams will take on Davidson Saturday in a virtual meet, with both teams swimming in their own pools and combining the results.  The women's teams will swim at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, with the men's teams scheduled to compete beginning at 1:45 p.m.  The meet results will be live on the Meet Mobile app, and W&M will stream its races through Facebook Live on the W&M Tribe Swimming page.  Due to facility rules in the Rec Center, no fans will be allowed to be in attendance at the pool.

Before each meet, W&M will take a moment to honor its seven seniors in the Class of 2021, five women and two men.  Between them, the seniors have led W&M to 50 combined wins, three Colonial Athletic Association Championships, and one invitational championship.

Saturday will also be a throwback to the early days of women's swimming at William & Mary, when the Tribe would regularly compete in national and regional "telegraphic meets" throughout the 1930s and 1940s.  In 1935, Doris Campbell won the 100 back in the National Telegraphic Meet, and in 1942, Anne Monihan set two meet records.  Post-World War II, Fran House set five Southern Division Telegraphic Meet records and three state records in 1947, then came back the next year and won the 100 breast and the 100 free at the national meet.

Scouting the Tribe Women
W&M is a perfect 2-0 on the year, defeating state rivals George Mason and Richmond in a tri-meet at GMU on Feb. 20.  Junior Missy Cundiff (Leesburg, Va.) was the star of the day, breaking the dual-meet record in the 50 free twice and also swimming three NCAA B-cuts and two lifetime-bests along the way, all the way down to 22.54 seconds.  Her classmate Anna Kenna (Chantilly, Va.) broke her own dual-meet record in the 100 back and swept both backstrokes, and sophomore Katie Stevenson (Wilton, Conn.) also recorded four wins with a sweep of the 100 free and the 200 free.  Senior Megan Bull (Hillsborough, N.J.) broke one of W&M's longest-standing dual meet records, in the 200 breast, and sophomore Annie Tuttle (Alexandria, Va.) also reset the dual meet record in the 100 breast.

Scouting the Tribe Men
On the men's side, W&M earned a 1-1 split at the George Mason tri-meet, falling to the host Patriots but defeating Colonial Athletic Association foes Delaware.  Junior Graham Hertweck (Greensboro, N.C.) was named the CAA Swimmer of the Week after recording a team-high three wins, including a sweep of the 50 free.  Sophomore Owen Miller (Kalamazoo, Mich.) had a pair of wins on the day, defeating Delaware in the 1,650 free and George Mason in the 500 free.

Scouting the Wildcats
This will be Davidson's first official meet of the year, after an earlier scheduled event against UNCW had to be postponed.  In 2020, both the men's and women's teams finished fifth in the Atlantic 10 Championships.  The top returning women's swimmers include Sarah Helen Shepherd, the A-10 champion in the 200 IM and the 400 IM, as well as 500 free champion Siena Senn and 2020 Rookie of the Year Shelby Stanley.  On the men's side, the Wildcats return senior diver Daniel Valmassei, who won the conference title in the 1-meter springboard, and a veteran-laden swimming corps including Mitchell Stanek, who had top-six finishes in both the 200 breast and the 400 IM.

The Series
- W&M and Davidson first met in women's swimming in 1993, and the Tribe has a lead in the series by a 23-2 margin.  Former CAA rivals, the Wildcats last won against W&M in 2004.

- This will be the 47th all-time meeting between Davidson and W&M in men's swimming, in a series that dates back to 1951.  The two teams are past conference rivals in both the Southern Conference and the CAA, and the Tribe holds the all-time lead 37-8-1.  The last Davidson win came in 2011.

Meet Format
Both the men and women will swim a standard 16-event line-up, with the 200 medley relay, 1000 free, 200 IM, and the 200 free relay included.  Each team will attempt to follow the same timeline, with results being shared between sites after each event, and team scores updated accordingly.
