Tribe Women Have Career Day at Navy

The William & Mary women's track & field team continues to improve with every meet, smashing its way to nearly 20 new entries in the record books on Saturday at Navy's Spring Invitational.  The Tribe won three events, while also finishing second in four events and third in five.

Leading the way on the day was redshirt-junior Taylor E. Jones (Fairfax Station, Va.), who set lifetime-bests in both of her events.  In the triple jump, she took second overall in 11.86m (38-11), the ninth-longest jump in school history.  A personal-best by one centimeter, it also improved Jones to fifth all-time among Tribe athletes.  She also took third place in the pole vault with a lifetime-best vault of 3.81m (12-6).  That improved Jones to a tie for fifth overall among W&M athletes.  Also in the pole vault, freshman Olesya Sitkowski (Phoenixville, Pa.) tied for fifth with a vault of 3.51m (11-6.25), improving to a tie for 13th in school history, and Elizabeth Upright (Oakton, Va.) was eighth with a clearance at 3.36m (11-0.25).

In the long jump, freshman Chelsea Mitchell (Canton, Conn.) tied the W&M freshman record with a jump of 5.59m (18-4.25), finishing third overall.  She matched the mark set by Nicole Dory '14 back in 2011, and tied for the 14th-longest jump in school history outdoors.  Mitchell is also now tied for sixth among Tribe athletes.  Her classmate Megan Heidebrecht (Amissville, Va.) was sixth with a jump of 5.36m (17-7), and redshirt-sophomore Claire Bailey (Fairfax, Va.) was ninth with a personal-best jump of 4.96m (16-3.25).  Bailey was also sixth in the high jump with a personal-best jump of 1.55m (5-1), while redshirt-freshmen Kristen Herr (Willow Street, Pa.) and Zoe Metzger (Wayne, Pa.) were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the javelin.  Herr threw the spear 41.03m (134-7), moving up to seventh in school history, while Metzger recorded a lifetime-best throw of 37.34m (122-6), and now ranks 15th all-time among Tribe athletes.

On the track, redshirt-freshman Amaya Johnson (Sterling, Va.) won the 200m dash in 24.76 seconds, the 10th-fastest time in school history, and in the 100m dash, redshirt-junior Felecia Hayes (Chesapeake, Va.) was the runner-up with her second lifetime-best in as many weeks, running 12.27 seconds.  That was tied for the 10th-fastest race ever at W&M, and ranks Hayes fifth among W&M athletes.  The freshman Mitchell was fifth in the 100m in 12.52 seconds, and now stands as the 14th-fastest sprinter ever at W&M.  Redshirt-junior Jadyn Currie (Virginia Beach, Va.) was seventh in the 100m hurdles at 15.16 seconds, and in the 400m hurdles, fifth-year senior Josie Landis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) ran a lifetime-best 1:03.72 for third place, and now ranks 11th in school history.  Redshirt-junior Aly Logue (Doylestown, Pa.) was eighth in the event in her first attempt, running 1:11.64.

The Tribe dominated the 400m dash, with four women in the top-five overall.  Freshman Mary Gregory (Reston, Va.) was second overall in 56.13 seconds, tied for the eighth-fastest athlete in school history, with classmate Grace Bir (Falls Church, Va.) close behind at 56.99 seconds for third place.  Bir now ranks 12th all-time at W&M.  In fourth place was redshirt-freshman Carly Swierbut (Newtown, Conn.), running 57.26 seconds to rank 16th in school history outdoors, while freshman Makenzie Joiner (Mechanicsville, Va.) was fifth in 57.78 seconds.  Rounding out the line-up was grad student Gabby Runge (Midlothian, Va.), who ran 59 seconds flat for eighth overall.

Redshirt-senior Taylor D. Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) won the 800m in 2:12.36, just off her lifetime-best, while Megan Dougherty (Sinking Spring, Pa.) was eighth in 2:20.66 and freshman Molly Coyle (Brookfield, Conn.) was tenth in 2:21.63.  Redshirt-senior Lauren Finikiotis (Gibsonia, Pa.) remained undefeated this spring, winning the 1,500m in 4:34.45, and freshman Lily Schlossberg (Virginia Beach, Va.) was close behind in 4:#5.69, good for fourth overall.  Her classmate Annie Wicker (Sewickley, Pa.) was ninth in the race, running 4:47.51.

Rounding out the day was the Tribe relays.  In the 4x100m relay, the team of Hayes, Johnson, Currie, and Mitchell combined to finish second in 47.36 seconds, the seventh-fastest race in school history.  At the other end of the meet, Johnson teammed up with Bir, Swierbut, and Gregory to win the 4x400m relay in 3:48.42, tied for the fourth-fastest race ever at W&M.  The "B" relay of Runge, Joiner, Jones, and Landis took third overall in 3:54.15.

William & Mary returns home next weekend, hosting the 55th Annual Colonial Relays on Friday and Saturday, April 2-3.
