The William & Mary women's track & field team continued its assault on the record board Saturday at the Sykes & Sabock Challenge, downing two more freshman records on the fast Penn State track. The Tribe also had four more ECAC Championships qualifiers, and a total of 11 new entries in the program record books.
- The first freshman record to fall Saturday came in the 60m dash, where
Amaya Johnson (Sterling, Va.) ran a career-best 7.87 seconds to place ninth overall in the prelims. In addition to breaking the rookie mark that was first set by
Kathleen Woody '07 in 2004 and later tied by
Katie Guevel '11 in 2008, Johnsons' race was also the 11th-fastest ever run at W&M, and ranks her third all-time among athletes behind only Woody and
Erica Johnson '06.
- Later, in the 200m dash, her classmate
Carly Swierbut (Newtown, Conn.) ran her third freshman record of the last three weeks. Swierbut finished 11th overall in 25.12 seconds, breaking the mark of 25.38 seconds that had been set by Guevel in 2008. It was also the fourth-fastest single race ever at W&M, and ranks Swierbut second among athletes. The one person ahead of her is redshirt-junior
Victoria Gersch (Mercer Island, Wash.), who ran the second-fastest race of both her career and W&M program history to take seventh overall Saturday in 24.82 seconds. That also qualified Gersch for the ECAC Championships. Redshirt-junior
Susanna Maisto (Silver Spring, Md.) ran an indoor-best 25.43 seconds for 13th place, the seventh-fastest race ever at W&M, and improved herself to fourth all-time among Tribe athletes.
- Gersch also got an ECAC qualifier earlier in the afternoon after running 56.26 seconds for fourth place in the 400m dash. That was the fourth-fastest race in school history, and the fastest of the season so far for W&M. Senior
Gabby Runge (Midlothian, Va.) was ninth overall in 57.72 seconds, improving her indoor best by a full second and lifting Runge up to eighth all-time among Tribe athletes.
- Junior
Lauren Finikiotis (Gibsonia, Pa.) ran a lifetime-best 4:57.02 in the mile for fourth overall, improving more than four-and-a-half seconds to qualify for the ECAC Championships.
- The final ECAC qualifier came in the pole vault, where senior
Lauren Graves (Fredericksburg, Va.) cleared the bar at 3.68m (12-0.75) for 10th place overall.
- In the 60m hurdles, junior
Jadyn Currie (Virginia Beach, Va.) shaved 0.02 seconds off her previous best to finish 13th overall in 9.02 seconds. That was tied for the 16th-fastest race in school history, and improves Currie to third all-time among W&M athletes.
- Senior
Alexis Brender a Brandis (Williamsburg, Va.) continued to be consistently excellent in the triple jump, taking fifth overall with a jump of 11.55m (37-10.75). That was the 14th-longest jump in school history indoors.
- In the 3,000m, redshirt-sophomore
Lauren Kroepfl (Robbinsville, N.J.) finished sixth overall in 10:14.43, improving her lifetime-best by nearly 20 seconds in the event.
- The final notable performance of the day came in the shot put, where freshman
Keeley Suzenski (Fleetwood, Pa.) was just shy of the freshman record she set earlier this season. Suzenski finished seventh overall in the event with a put of 13.42m (44-0.5).
William & Mary is back in action next weekend, Friday and Saturday Feb. 14-15, at the VMI Indoor Classic in Lexington, Va.
