Rosie Cheng Clinches Women's Tennis Win over Georgia State

DES MOINES, Iowa – Senior Rosie Cheng notched a three-set win at No. 2 as William & Mary women's tennis knocked off former Colonial Athletic Association foe Georgia State, 4-1, at Life Time Fitness on Saturday afternoon. The Tribe (4-2) won the doubles points before receiving singles wins from junior Vitoria Okuyama and freshman Raffaela Alhach and Cheng to upend the Panthers (2-4).
 
How It Happened
- The Tribe rallied to capture the doubles point thanks to wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
- After Georgia State won at the top spot, senior Charlotte Madson and freshman Elisa Van Meeteren pulled W&M even with a win at No. 3. The Tribe duo improved to 5-1 at No. 3 with a 6-3 triumph over Damira Muminovic and Andreea Stanescu.
- The initial point of the match came down to a tiebreaker at the No. 2 spot. Senior Rosie Cheng and freshman Raffaela Alhach secure the 1-0 lead with their first win as a pair, upending Mara Pop and Aleksandra Stromova, 7-6 (4).  
- After Georgia State pulled even with a victory at the No. 5 singles post, junior Vitoria Okuyama and Alhach won at No. 3 and No. 6 to give the Green and Gold a 3-1 lead.
- Okuyama topped Angel Carney in straight-sets, 7-5, 6-3, on line three to give the Tribe the lead for good. The Tribe junior ran her season mark to 9-6, improving to 3-2 in dual-match competition.
- Alhach need a tiebreaker to pull out the first set, 7-6 (4), at No. 6 against Pop. The Tribe rookie rolled in the final set without dropping a game, 6-0, on the way to her first career dual-match win.
- With a trio of matches in third sets at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4, Cheng clinched the Tribe victory with a win on line two. The Tribe senior won the opening set, 6-3, before dropping the second, 6-2, to Muminovic. Cheng came on strong in the third, blitzing the Georgia State player, 6-0, to improve to 2-1 in dual-match action.
 
Up Next
- The Tribe returns home to host a pair of matches next weekend. W&M welcomes East Carolina on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m., before facing Big Ten foe Wisconsin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23. Both matches will be played at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
