W&M Men Add School Record, Five IC4A Qualifiers to Weekend at Penn State

The William & Mary men's track & field team wrapped up a strong weekend at the Penn State National Open on Saturday, adding five more IC4A qualifiers and a school record to the three qualifiers already posted on Friday night.  After just three meets, the Tribe has already earned 22 qualifying marks.

- In the 600m dash, where redshirt-sophomore Colin Grip (Acton, Mass.) broke the school record with his fourth-place time of 1:21.41.  The previous record of 1:22.07 was set by Troy Sevachko '18 in December of 2017.

- The lone field event of the day was the shot put, where junior Connor Scott (Mechanicsville, Va.) recorded a lifetime-best put of 16.84m (55-3) to finish seventh overall.  That improved Scott up to sixth all-time at W&M indoors.  He finished just ahead of classmate KJ Cook (Buena Vista, Va.), eighth at 16.67m (54-8.25), as both men re-qualified themselves for the IC4A Championships.

- In the 800m run, redshirt-senior Chris Short (Toano, Va.) finished sixth overall in an IC4A-qualifying time of 1:51.89, one of the 20 fastest metric races in school history indoors.

- The final two qualifying marks both came in the 3,000m run.  First, redshirt-sophomore Evan Goodell (St. Louis, Mich.) won the college section with a lifetime-best 8:24.69, improving his previous best by more than seven seconds.  Later in the afternoon, redshirt-junior JP Trojan (Chardon, Ohio) finished sixth overall in the invitational section, improving his best-ever by more than 14 seconds to finish in 8:17.99.

- The day started off with the 400m dash, where redshirt-junior Theo Chambers (McLean, Va.) was just behind the IC4A standard while taking fourth in 49.36 seconds.  That was an indoor-best for Chambers and the sixth-fastest race ever indoors at W&M.  He now ranks fourth all-time among Tribe athletes in the indoor 400m.

- The mile run saw Patrick Lynch (Vienna, Va.) finish third overall in 4:16.09, improving on the mark he set last week at GMU.

William & Mary will return to Penn State next weekend, Saturday, Feb. 8, for the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup.  The Tribe finished third overall in the team scored event last season.
