The Colonial Relays
This is the 54th running of the Colonial Relays, which were first held all the way back in 1963. All of the throwing events are held at the Dan Stimson Throwing Events Area, next to Green & Gold Village, while the running and jumping events are held inside of Zable Stadium.
The Opponents
This year, there are 52 men's teams entered in the nation's largest regular-season scored meet. They represent all three NCAA divisions, as well as the NAIA and the NJCAA. In addition to the host Tribe, teams entered this year include American, Binghamton, Bryant & Stratton (Va.), Bucknell, Central Connecticut, Charleston (W.Va.), Christopher Newport, Columbia, Delaware State, Duquesne, Fordham, George Mason, Hampton, Jefferson (Pa.), John Carroll, Lock Haven, Louisburg, Lynchburg, Manhattan, Mansfield, Marist, Mary Washington, Milligan, Monmouth, Monroe College, Montreat, Mount Olive, Mount St. Mary's, New Hampshire, Norfolk State, Otterbein, Quinnipiac, Rhode Island, Rhodes, Richmond, Rider, Saint Francis (Pa.), Shippensburg, St. Francis (N.Y.), St. Peter's, Stonehill, Stony Brook, TCNJ, UMass Lowell, UNC Pembroke, Vermont, Virginia Wesleyan, Wagner, Wilmington (Del.), and Wingate.
Defending Champions
The William & Mary men won the Colonial Relays team title last year, its third win since 2001. This year, the Tribe will be looking to become the first back-to-back champions since the last time it did it, in 2008 and 2009. Each event is scored 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 to determine the overall winners.
W&M Notes
- Sophomore
Miles Owens (Yorktown, Va.) is the defending champion in the 800m run, winning last year with FloTrack's Kick of the Week as a true freshman in 1:50.38. He'll be back to try and win again this year, and if he can do that, he'll be the first repeat champion since former SEC Champion Kraig Cesar in 1990 and 1991.
- Also back looking to defend his championship is grad student
Preston Richardson (Franktown, Va.), who won the discus a year ago while competing unattached. Richardson is entered in all three heavy weight events (shot, discus, hammer) alongside sophomores
KJ Cook (Buena Vista, Va.) and
Connor Scott (Mechanicsville, Va.).
- Speaking of Cook, he is the reigning CAA Athlete of the Week after three top-10 finishes last week at the Raleigh Relays in the three throws. He leads the Colonial Athletic Association this season in both the shot put and the hammer throw, as well as ranking third in the discus.
- Senior
Ryan McGorty (Fairfax, Va.) is also a reigning CAA Athlete of the Week, after running a lifetime-best at 5,000m last week. This weekend, he is the top seed in the 1,500m run, where he'll be trying to become W&M's first champion in the event since
Ian Fitzgerald '09 back in 2008.
- Other events of note include the shot put, where W&M has four athletes in the championship section. A Tribe athlete has won three of the last five titles in the shot put, but all three titles came from former great
Taylor Frenia '17.
- In the hammer throw, Cook, Richardson, and
Jason Wright (Huntington Station, N.Y.) are all in the championship section, looking to give W&M back-to-back wins in the event. That last school to accomplish that was Temple back in 2010 and 2011, but one of the top obstacles standing in the Tribe's way is the defending champion,
Tom Parker MSBA '18, who is entered as an unattached athlete this year.
- W&M is entered in only two relays, but is a strong contender in both. In the 4x1,500m, the Tribe is the defending champion and looking for the first repeat win since W&M did it in 2012 and 2013. Meanwhile in the 4x400m relay, the Tribe has never won but will be looking to make history this year with the same line-up that broke the school record indoors in 3:13.24 -
Theo Chambers (McLean, Va.),
Skander Ballard (Reston, Va.),
Duncan Goodrich (Richmond, Va.), and Owens.
