The William & Mary men's track & field team welcomes state rivals Virginia and George Mason to Williamsburg on Saturday, hosting the W&M Triangular to begin the outdoor track & field season. Action begins with the hammer throw at 11 a.m. at the Dan Stimson Throwing Events Area, while inside Zable Stadium the first event is the pole vault, beginning at 12 p.m. While the meet isn't being team-scored, live results will be available through TribeAthletics.com.
The W&M men were a strong 109-14 (.886) during the indoor campaign this year, which included a sixth-place finish at the season-ending IC4A Championships two weeks ago. That was the Tribe's first winter season over 100 wins in more than 15 years, and follows up on back-to-back 100 win seasons outdoors in 2016-17 and 2017-18. Thanks to that strong season, W&M already has 10 individuals and two relays qualified for the IC4A outdoor meet, nearly as many qualifiers as the team took to the meet last year (14 individuals, one relay) en route to a program-record third-place finish. While many of those qualifiers won't be competing this weekend on the track, the field events are another matter entirely.
In the throws, a W&M strength for much of the last decade, the Tribe already has three men qualified in the shot put and two of those in the hammer throw as well. The latter event is the first of the day Saturday, and will see sophomores
Jason Wright (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and
KJ Cook (Buena Vista, Va.) competing. Wright is the freshman record-holder in the hammer throw and qualified for the USAT&F U20 Championships last summer, while Cook (who is already qualified thanks to a top-six finish indoors in the weight throw) held the rookie mark for most of last season before being pipped by Wright at the end of the year. Cook is also qualified in the shot put, as is grad student
Preston Richardson (Franktown, Va.) and sophomore
Connor Scott (Mechanicsville, Va.). Those three, as well as senior
Vlad Castillo, Jr. (Belle Mead, N.J.) and true freshman
Troy Yearwood (Chesapeake, Va.), will compete in both the shot put and the discus on Saturday. Richardson, Cook, and Scott are all prior IC4A qualifiers in the discus, with the two underclassmen both earning All-East honors last spring.
Inside the stadium, highlighted events include the 200m dash, where senior
Duncan Goodrich (Richmond, Va.) runs alongside
Theo Chambers (McLean, Va.) and
Matt Chabala (San Ramon, Calif.). Goodrich was an IC4A qualifier in the 200m last year, and is coming off a career-best indoor season where he qualified for IC4As and broke the school record indoors at 400m. Both he and Chambers also ran on the Tribe's school-record 4x400m relay that finished fifth at the championships. Junior
Raul Chavez-Gutierrez (Marshall, Va.), the reigning CAA Champion at 800m, will step up to the 1,500m this weekend, while redshirt-junior
Cole Clark (Weston, Conn.) is entered in both the 1,500m and the 800m. Sophomore
Tyler Kuchan (Christiansburg, Va.) was fifth in the CAA 3,000m steeplechase last year, and begins his quest for the conference title this season with a turn at the shorter 2,000m steeplechase. In the jumps, redshirt-sophomore
George Cross (Leesburg, Va.) is entered in both the long jump and the triple jump, where he was third in the CAA a year ago, while his former high school teammate freshman
Ryan Thomas (Leesburg, Va.) is entered in both the high jump and the 100m dash. Finishing out the day for the Tribe is the 5,000m run, where junior
Cooper Leslie (Camp Hill, Pa.) looks to lead redshirt-freshmen
Evan Goodell (St. Louis, Mich.) and
Micah Pratt (Lynchburg, Va.) under the IC4A qualifying standard of 14:45.00.
