The William & Mary women's track & field team started the indoor season on Saturday with a bang, breaking one freshman record and qualifying five for the ECAC Championships. Despite only have 25 individual entries at the Navy Invitational, the Tribe scored 73 points and finished fourth out of six teams at the event. Of W&M's 25 performances, 19 were either lifetime or indoor-best performances.
- One of the best events of the day was the final one, the 4x400m relay, where the Tribe finished second overall. The team included senior
Gabby Runge (Midlothian, Va.), redshirt-junior
Victoria Gersch (Mercer Island, Wash.), freshman
Carly Swierbut (Newtown, Conn.), and redshirt-junior
Susanna Maisto (Silver Spring, Md.) combined to run 3:46.62, an ECAC-qualifying time and the third-fastest race in school history. It was the fastest non-championship relay by 4.5 seconds, and was eight seconds faster than W&M ran at this same meet last year.
- The Tribe's three upperclassmen from that relay all ran individual ECAC qualifiers earlier in the day in the 500m dash. Maisto, who finished sixth in that event at last winter's championship meet, led the way once again by running 1:14.54 for second overall. That was the 11th-fastest single race in school history. Gersch was fourth in 1:15.52, a lifetime-best, and Runge also ran a best-ever time of 1:15.61 for fifth place. The pair now rank eighth and 10th, respectively, all-time among W&M athletes.
- W&M's fifth qualifying mark came in the pole vault, where senior
Lauren Graves (Fredericksburg, Va.) jumped an indoor-best 3.70m (12-1.5) for fourth overall. That moved Graves up to a tie for seventh all-time indoors and qualified her for the ECAC indoor championships for the first time. Also with a big day in the pole vault was redshirt-junior
Sophie Caplan (Clarksville, Md.), who took ninth with a lifetime-best vault of 3.40m (11-1.75). That moved Caplan up to a tie for 14th in school history in the event.
- In the shot put, freshman
Keeley Suzenski (Fleetwood, Pa.) got her collegiate career off to a strong start, breaking W&M's freshman record with a fourth-place put of 13.47m (44-2.5). Just shy of the ECAC mark, Suzenski now ranks seventh in school history after her first meet. Sophomore
Chelsea Wallace (Chesapeake, Va.) was right behind her in fifth place, with an indoor-best put of 12.99m (42-7.5) to improve to 12th all-time among W&M athletes.
- In the triple jump, senior
Alexis Brender a Brandis (Williamsburg, Va.) and junior
Taylor E. Jones (Fairfax Station, Va.) each recorded indoor-bests, placing fourth and fifth, respectively. Brender a Brandis hit the sand at 11.61m (38-1.25), the 11th-longest jump in school history, and improved to third all-time at W&M in the event. Jones, meanwhile, improved to fourth all-time among the Tribe with her jump of 11.47m (37-7.75).
- Junior
Jadyn Currie (Virginia Beach, Va.) had a pair of lifetime-best performances her day. First, in the 60m hurdles, she ran 9.04 seconds for 11th overall and to improve her previous best by 0.18 seconds, rising to a tie for third in school history. Currie later came back to run 26.27 seconds in the 200m dash, an indoor-best that now ranks her 16th all-time at W&M.
- In the long jump, redshirt-freshman
Monay James (Chester, Va.) was just a centimeter away from her all-time best, finishing 10th with a jump of 5.50m (18-0.5) to rank 11th all-time at W&M indoors.
- Also ranking 11th in school history is redshirt-sophomore
Felecia Hayes (Chesapeake, Va.), who ran a lifetime-best 8.07 seconds in the 60m dash.
- In the mile run, junior
Taylor D. Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) picked up the win in 4:59.72, less than a second off of ECAc qualifying in her first-ever attempt at the distance. Senior
Deirdre Lewin (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) was fourth overall, crossing the line in 5:11.08.
- Rounding out the notable events was the 1,000m run, where three Tribe freshmen all ran lifetime-bests.
Megan Dougherty (Sinking Spring, Pa.) led the way in 3:00.82 for fourth overall, while
Hope Stephens (Springfield, Va.) was close behind in 3:01.80 for sixth place.
Kaycee Cox-Philyaw (Linden, Va.) was right behind Stephens in seventh place, stopping the clock in 3:02.40.
William & Mary now has the next month and a half off for exams, holidays, and training. The Tribe's next scheduled meet will be on Saturday, Jan. 25, at the George Mason Patriot Games in Fairfax, Va.
