The William & Mary field hockey team picked up six late presents on the way to holiday break Friday, with the announcement of the 2019 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State Field Hockey Team. The Tribe had six athletes earn all-state honors this fall, the most of any of the state's eight Division I programs, and the second-most in program history behind only the seven honorees from 2017.
Leading the way as she has all season long was senior captain
Christie van de Kamp (Midlothian, Va.), who was named first-team all-state for the second straight year. She is the fifth two-time first-team honoree in school history and the first since
Pippin Saunders '16. Last week, van de Kamp was named a third-team All-American by both the NFHCA and SynapseSports.com, and was also the CAA Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-CAA and all-region, all for the second year in a row. She led the Tribe this season to an eight-game winning streak, including a 2-1 double-overtime upset of No. 5 Louisville, and a No. 23 national ranking in the regular season. Van de Kamp was the team's top scorer with 23 points, on eight goals and seven assists, and she also led the nation with six penalty-stroke goals, more by herself than any other team combined scored in 2019.
Also earning a spot on the all-state first team was sophomore captain
Cara Menges (Richmond, Va.), who was named all-state for the first time in her young career. Menges started every game in the midfield for W&M, scoring five goals and four assists. That including the tying goal in the fourth quarter against No. 5 Louisville to send the game to overtime, where the Tribe would eventually win out over the Cardinals. Menges was named second-team all-region and second-team All-CAA as well, and also had a defensive save in the game against Old Dominion early in the season.
Making the all-state second team were a quartet of Tribe standouts. Senior captain
Annie Snead (Midlothian, Va.) was named second-team all-state for the second year in a row, following a season that saw her become W&M's all-time leading assist-maker with 26 in her career. Snead had three goals and six assists in her final season, and was named the CAA Player of the Week on Oct. 8 following an outstanding weekend with three goals and three assists in wins over James Madison and Georgetown. Snead was also named second-team all-region and first-team All-CAA this year, as well as earned a spot on the CAA All-Tournament team to become the third player in school history and 18th in CAA history to be named to all four all-conference teams in her career.
Fellow senior
Cassidy Goodwin (Gloucester, Va.) was also named second-team all-state for the second time in her career, after also earning the award following the 2017 season. Goodwin had a career-best season on the field, scoring seven goals for W&M and also picking up a pair of defensive saves early in the year. She was named the CAA Player of the Week on Oct. 22 after scoring four of her goals in back-to-back road wins over Delaware and against Lafayette. Like Snead, Goodwin was named second-team all-region, first-team All-CAA, and to the CAA All-Tournament team this fall, becoming the second player in school history and 17th-ever in the conference to be named to all four all-conference teams (first, second, rookie, and tournament) in her career. Goodwin also finished four years tied for W&M's program record with six career All-CAA awards and three All-Tournament honors, joining
Anna Davis '05 to stand atop both categories.
Senior forward
Woodard Hooper (Williamsburg, Va.) wrapped up her career with her second-straight all-state award, landing on the second-team this year after earning first-team honors in 2018. She ranked second on the team this year in scoring with 16 points, scoring seven goals (all against different opponents) and a career-best two assists. Hooper had three game-winners this season, including in double-overtime against Northeastern, bringing her career total to 12 game-winning goals, fourth-most ever at W&M and the most since 2002. She also finished the season as the active scoring leader at W&M with 30 goals, tied for 11th in school history, and 64 points, 16th-most all-time.
Rounding out the all-state honorees was freshman defender
Tabby Billingham (Dallinghoo, Suffolk, England), who was named to the all-state second team. Billingham was the only rookie this year for W&M to start every game, and one of just six players to do that overall. From her defensive wing position, she helped the Tribe defense to hold opponents to just 5.84 shots on-goal per game, the lowest average for W&M since the 2000 season and one of just four seasons ever under 6.0 for the Tribe. Billingham could also serve well in the attack and on the penalty corner unit, picking up an assist in the win over Vermont.
VaSID names 37 all-state teams in 22 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a college, university, or athletic conference in the state of Virginia.
