William & Mary freshman
Lily Saunders (Mount Joy, Pa.) earned the Tribe's first Colonial Athletic Association weekly honor on Tuesday, after she was named the Rookie of the Week for her part in Sunday's win over Vermont. In addition to being the first award winner of the season for W&M, Saunders is the sixth current member of the team to earn Rookie of the Week honors in the last four years.
With W&M facing a 1-0 deficit late in the second quarter in Sunday's game against Vermont, Saunders sparked the team to scoring three unanswered goals en route to victory. Senior captain
Annie Snead (Midlothian, Va.) carried the ball over midfield on a counter-attack after a Catamounts corner, and found junior
Ella Donahue (Midlothian, Va.) at the 23-meter line. Donahue in turn carried forward to the dots, and smacked the ball into the circle where Saunders was cutting through, and the freshman hit a one-timer from the middle of the circle and into the goal to tie the match 1-1. It was Saunders' first career goal and first career points, and allowed the Tribe to push ahead with two more goals in the second half and win its second game in a row. For the season, Saunders has taken six shots, four of them on-goal, and she is the first rookie for W&M to score a goal this season.
Saunders and her teammates return to action at Busch Field tonight, taking on state-rival Longwood at 6 p.m.
