#28 Women's Tennis Wins Fourth Straight, Downs Georgia State, 5-2

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Fresh off moving up to No. 28 in the national rankings, the William and Mary women's tennis team won its fourth straight, 5-2, over former CAA counterpart Georgia State on Saturday morning at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. After dropping the doubles point, the Green and Gold received singles wins from senior Jeltje Loomans, junior Leeza Nemchinov, sophomore Mélanie Roy and freshmen Maria Groener and Cecily Wuenscher to down the Panthers. W&M upped its season ledger to 9-2, while Georgia State, who downed No. 61 VCU on Saturday, fell to 7-5.

Georgia State took the doubles point to open the match. After a Panther win at No. 3, Nemchinov and Loomans posted a nationally-ranked win at No. 1. The No. 48-ranked Green and Gold pairing won the final three games in downing the No. 40-ranked GSU team of Tarani Kamoe and Linn Timmermann, 6-3. Nemchinov and Loomans improved to 14-3 overall and 8-2 at No. 1. The Georgia State tandem of Kristin Rehse and Niri Rasolomalala clinched the point with a 6-4 win at No. 2.

The Tribe quickly answered by winning five of the six first sets in singles action. Groener pulled W&M even with a convincing win at No. 5. She won her third straight match, knocking off Chaimaa Roudami, 6-1, 6-1, to improve to 15-7 on the year with her eighth dual-match win.

Nemchinov and Loomans continued their dominating campaigns at the top of the Tribe's singles lineup. Nemchinov ran her win streak to 11 straight with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Masa Grgan. She moved to a perfect 10-0 at No. 1 and 18-2 overall. Loomans rolled to her fourth win in a row, upending Rasolomalala, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2. It marked the 60th singles win of Loomans' career as she improved to 16-4 this season.

After a Georgia State win at No. 3, Wuenscher clinched the Tribe victory with her fourth straight win at No. 6. The Green and Gold rookie took down GSU's Veronika Golanova, 6-3, 6-2, to improved to 10-8 on the year. One day earlier, Golanova was the hero for the Panthers, winning at No. 6 to clinch its victory over VCU.

Roy closed out the Tribe triumph with a thrilling three-set victory over GSU's Kristin Rehse, who leads the Panthers in singles wins with 15. The Tribe sophomore won the opening set, 6-4, before her Georgia State counterpart took the second, 6-3. In an entertaining third-set super tiebreaker, the competitors fought off a combined nine match points in a back-and-forth affair as Roy outlasted Rehse, 18-16, for her second straight win. She evened her singles mark at 9-9 with her sixth dual-match victory of the season.

The Tribe closes out its four-match homestand against Navy on Saturday, March 7. W&M hosts the Mids at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center beginning at 11 a.m.
