Tribe Women's Track and Field Aims for CAA Championships

The William and Mary women's track and field team heads to Harrisonburg, Va., this weekend looking to defend its Colonial Athletic Association Championships.  The Tribe will be in action Friday and Saturday, May 2-3, as it tries for its 12th conference title, almost half of the total number of championships in CAA history.  This year is the 25th annual conference meet.

The Challengers
In addition to W&M, teams in competition this weekend include favored Delaware, and previous champions James Madison and Northeastern.  Towson, UNCW, and league newcomer College of Charleston will also be competing.  The top eight finishers in each event score, with the top three earning all-conference honors.

The Schedule
Events begin with the javelin throw on Friday morning, at 9 a.m., and continue through the 4x400m relay on Saturday evening.  Events Friday include prelims of every event in distance between the 100m dash and the 1,500m run (including the 100m and 400m hurdles), as well as the finals of the 5,000m, 10,000m, and the javelin, hammer, long jump, and pole vault.  Saturday will bring the finals of all of Friday's prelims, as well the 4x100m and 4x400m relays, the 3,000m steeplechase, the high jump, the triple jump, shot put, and discus.  The heptathlon will begin Friday morning with four events, and finish Saturday with three events.

Scouting the Tribe
The Tribe brings a full 35-athlete squad to this weekend's meet, competing in every event except the 100m hurdles.  Five women are returning champions, include senior All-American Elaina Balouris (Allison Park, Pa.), who won the 10,000m in 2012 and was the CAA Athlete of the Year last spring.  Balouris was runner-up in both the 1,500m and 5,000m in 2013 and will attempt both events again this weekend, alongside fellow champions Meghan McGovern (North Wales, Pa.) and Emily Stites (Wyoming, Ohio).  McGovern won the 5,000m last year as a freshman with a conference-record time, as did Stites in the 10,000m in the midst of an All-American campaign.  In the field events, sophomores Katie Johnston (Haddonfield, N.J.) and Rochelle Evans (Christiansburg, Va.) are looking to repeat as champions in the javelin and the shot put, respectively, and will also both compete in the discus.

In addition to the returning champions, several women are near the top of the seeding charts in their events.  Balouris and Stites are ranked 1-2 in the 5,000m after running sub-16 at the Colonial Relays, and Dylan Hassett (Alpharetta, Ga.) timed 34:53 in the 10,000m last week at the Penn Relays for the best time in the league by more than a full minute.  Claire Tito (Richmond, Va.) ranks second in the 800m, and McGovern is third in the 1,500m and the 5,000m.  In the field, junior Elizabeth Crafford (Darien, Conn.) is ranked second in the pole vault, and Evans is picked runner-up in the shot put.  Johnston is the third-seed in both the discus and the javelin, as is the Tribe's 4x400m relay that could include any number of sprinters.
