Smutsky, Walsh Honored with Top CAA Awards

The William and Mary men's track and field program took home two of the top three awards from the Colonial Athletic Association Monday, according to a vote of the league coaches.  Bob Smutsky (Dillsburg, Pa.) was picked as the conference's Rookie of the Year, and Stephen Walsh was named the Coach of the Year.  These latest awards are in addition to earlier announcements, which included Brian Waterfield (Chesapeake, Va.) being named the Field Athlete of the Championships, and Alex McGrath '12 being picked as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Smutsky had one of the most impressive freshman campaigns in recent memory, and was rewarded with the pick as the CAA's top rookie in 2013.  Most recently, he won the USAT&F Junior National Championship in the javelin, with a lifetime-best effort of 69.08m (226-8) coming on the very last throw.  He was also 15th at the NCAA East semifinals, and won the conference title in the javelin to start the month of May.  Also an accomplished sprinter, he qualified for the IC4A Championships both indoors and outdoors in the 200m, running 21.68 and 22.21, respectively, with the latter setting the Tribe's freshman record indoors.  Smutsky is the fifth W&M men's athlete to win Rookie of the Year honors in track and field, and the first since fellow javelinist Brandon Heroux '12 back in 2009.

Walsh was the pick as Coach of the Year, after leading the Tribe to its first CAA team championship since 2004.  W&M athletes won six conference titles over the course of the two-day championship meet, and had 18 individual All-CAA awards as well as both relays claiming all-conference distinction.  Walsh also had seven men qualify for the NCAA Championships.  He becomes the first coach in conference history to be named Coach of the Year three times in a single school year, and the first to ever win both men's and women's track and field honors, much less in the same season.
