Women's Tennis Hosts ODU on Senior Day

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - An action-packed Saturday awaits the William and Mary women's tennis program as it hosts Old Dominion on Saturday, April 13. Both the Tribe men and women will square off with the Monarchs in simultaneous matches at the Millie West Tennis Facility beginning at 2 p.m. The match with ODU will mark Senior Day for the Green and Gold as the Tribe will honor its senior class of Anik Cepeda and Marlen Mesgarzadeh following doubles competition.

With just three sports remaining, the Optima Health Challenge, a running score of all the direct competitions between W&M and ODU, is hitting the home stretch. The all-sports score is tied a 45 with 10 points available in each of the men's and women's tennis matches on Saturday. The Tribe will also host Griffin's Kids Club Day starting at 1 p.m. at the Millie West Tennis Facility prior to the match.

Scouting the Tribe
W&M is coming off a split of matches against former CAA foes Georgia State and VCU. The Green and Gold rallied for a 4-3 win over No. 58-ranked Georgia State, before dropping a 4-3 decision at No. 39 VCU. The Tribe is currently ranked No. 41 nationally with a season ledger of 14-5. Against Georgia State, W&M received straight-set wins from freshman Leeza Nemchinov and senior Anik Cepeda, before juniors Maria Belaya and Hope Johnson tallied three-set wins. Belaya upset the No. 37-ranked player in the country at the top spot to clinch the Tribe victory. W&M took the doubles point against VCU with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, but only Nemchinov and Cepeda pulled out singles wins as the Green and Gold dropped a tight 4-3 match-up. Cepeda and Nemchinov continue to lead W&M in singles victories with 24 and 21, respectively, while Belaya moved into the ITA national singles rankings at No. 124. Belaya and Loomans are once again ranked among the top 10 nationally at No. 8 in the ITA poll released on Tuesday.

Scouting Old Dominion
ODU enters the weekend on a three-match winning streak, sitting at 12-7 overall and 3-1 in CAA play. During its recent run, the Monarchs have dispatched of a trio of CAA foes in Delaware, Towson and James Madison. W&M and ODU have six common opponents in UMBC, Penn, VCU, UNCW, James Madison and Richmond. The Monarchs are 4-2 against the group, while the Tribe sports a 5-1 ledger with the difference a W&M win over UNCW. Diana Ivanova holds down the No. 1 singles spot with 11 wins overall and an 8-7 ledger at the top post. Nikol Hristova possesses 10 wins at No. 2, while Melissa Esnal Olguin leads team with a 13-5 singles mark in dual match play. Ivanova and Hristova are 6-4 at No. 1 doubles for ODU, while Juliana Pires teams with Esnal Olguin for a 9-3 mark at No. 2.

Highlighting the Tribe Seniors
Cepeda is a three-time All-CAA doubles selection, including a two-time first team honoree. She owns 85 career singles wins and 75 doubles victories over her four seasons. As a senior, Cepeda tops the Green and Gold with 24 singles wins, while also posting 17 doubles triumphs. In 2011, she was Second-Team All-CAA choice in singles and competed in the NCAA Doubles Championship. Last season, Cepeda was an ITA Scholar-Athlete selection.
A W&M Provost Award winner, Mesgarzadeh is a two-time First-Team All-CAA choice in singles and a two-time third-team All-CAA honoree in doubles. Despite missing most of the last two seasons due to injury, she owns 37 career singles wins and 41 career doubles victories.

News and Notes
- W&M leads the all-time series with the Monarchs at 45-4, including a 21-1 mark in Williamsburg. Old Dominion snapped an 11-match losing streak to the Tribe with a 4-3 win over the Green and Gold in the CAA Quarterfinals last season. W&M has not suffered a regular season loss to ODU since 1981.

- The Tribe-Monarch matchup will have 10 points up for grabs in the Optima Health Challenge, a running score of all the direct competitions between W&M and ODU. For the second consecutive year, the Tribe and Monarchs have partnered with title sponsor, Optima Health, for the Challenge. A champion will be named at the end of the 2012-13 athletic season and receive the Optima Health Trophy. The current standings are tied at 45 apiece with 10 points available in each of the three remaining sports (men's tennis, women's tennis and baseball).

- Saturday's W&M-ODU doubleheader will also mark Griffin's Kids Club Day at Tennis. The event will begin at 1 p.m. at the Millie West Tennis Facility and is open to children ages 12 and under. It will include free snacks, games and prizes for kids. 

- For the second time this season, junior Maria Belaya was named the CAA Player of the Week on April 9 after upsetting the No. 37-ranked player in the country to clinch the Tribe's win over Georgia State. It marked 10th CAA weekly award overall for Belaya. In the Tribe's 4-3 win over Georgia State, Belaya bounced No. 37-ranked Abigail Tere-Apisah, 7-5, 6-7, 6-1, as W&M rallied past the Panthers. It marked Belaya's 30th singles win during her two seasons with the Tribe. This season, she owns 18 wins, including 12 in dual-match play. The win over Tere-Apisah, who was ranked as high as No. 22 this season, was Belaya's second over a nationally-ranked foe this season.

- W&M will host the 2013 CAA Tennis Championships at the Millie West Tennis Facility, April 19-21. It marks the eighth time that W&M has hosted the women's championship and the fifth time it welcomes the women's event. The quarterfinals will be on Friday, April 19, with the semifinals to follow on Saturday, April 20, and the championship on Sunday, April 21. The top two seeds will receive an opening round bye on the men's side, while the No. 1 seed in the women's tournament earns a bye into the semifinals.
